Built in 1935; LMS Black Five 45163 has a great future ahead once it is fully restored back to working order.
For 30 years 45163 was used in North West England and Scotland hauling passenger trains and freight trains before being retired from service in 1965 and moving to Barry in 1966.
For 21 years 45163 sat in storage at Barry Scrapyard before being preserved in 1987 and being moved to Hull where restoration started with repairs being done to some of the main parts while new ones were made to replace old ones.
In 1991 45163 moved to the Colne Valley Railway where it has been based until 2024.
The frame structure, smokebox, wheels, cylinders and cab are all complete but there is still work being done on the boiler, tender and other new smaller parts.
The main locomotive is now at Ian Riley’s workshop in Bury after moving there in 2024 to allow the 45163 LTD group to continue working on the rest of the locomotive including the boiler.
It’s possible that 45163 will steam again next year for the first time in 62 years and will be used possibly on the Fort William to Mallaig route.
I look forward to seeing 45163 steam again soon.

Black 5, 44871 barks towards Beasdale station with an afternoon Jacobite. 28.08.2026.

A shot like this would usually be too narrow for me, but I think this one works. I may also be posting the colour version of this photo later in the week or near future because it works just as well 👌

Working hard on the mainline… 🚂💨

LMS Black 5 No. 44871 powers through Wedgwood Level Crossing at Barlaston during The Stratford Flyer on 9th March 2024.

Running from Manchester to Stratford-upon-Avon with Railway Touring Company and West Coast Railways, this was mainline steam at its finest — plenty of power, plenty of steam and an atmosphere you just can’t beat. 🔥

One to remember.

44871 || Glennfinnan Viaduct, Großbritannien, 10.06.2026
