Before Matt Serra became a UFC World Champion… there were nights like this. 🥊

RARE, NEVER-BEFORE-SEEN FOOTAGE.

Pulled straight from the original Super VHS tapes, this is a young Matt Serra fighting at the legendary Vanderbilt in Long Island.

No HD cameras.
No social media.
Just old-school MMA, raw talent, and fighters looking to make a name for themselves.

This is the kind of footage that rarely sees the light of day — and a piece of MMA history worth preserving.

Who remembers the fight nights at the Vanderbilt? 👇

𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝗠𝗠𝗔 𝗯𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝘁 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗮𝗺𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗺. 🥊

Before the sold-out arenas.
Before the million-dollar fights.
Before everyone knew the names.

There were small venues, hungry fighters, packed rooms—and people building a sport without knowing just how big it would eventually become.

We’re opening the archives to tell the stories of the fighters, promoters, coaches and pioneers who helped build modern MMA.

𝗪𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗕𝗼𝗯𝗯𝘆 𝗦𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗮, 𝘄𝗲 𝗺𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗼𝘁𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝘁𝗼𝗱𝗮𝘆. 🎥🥊

Long before everyone had a camera in their pocket, Robert 'Bobby' Santa was walking around Ring Fever with a 𝗦𝘂𝗽𝗲𝗿 𝗩𝗛𝗦 𝗰𝗮𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗮, capturing the fights—and just as importantly, everything happening behind the scenes.

Decades later, that footage became an invaluable window into the early days and helped us tell the story in The Godfather of MMA.

Sometimes you don't realize you're documenting history until years later.

𝗘𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗳𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗮 𝗱𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗺. 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸. 🥊

Louis Neglia went from local tournaments and championships to becoming a contender on the world stage.

30 wins. 2 losses.

And then came the opportunity he'd been chasing — 𝗮 𝗳𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽.

“I knew my dream was right in front of me.”

This was Louis Neglia before Ring of Combat. Before promoting. Before helping shape the future of MMA.

Live from 𝗥𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗳 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗯𝗮𝘁 𝟵𝟭, we caught up with 𝗙𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗸𝗶𝗲 𝗕𝗹𝗼𝗶𝘀𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗱𝗮𝘂𝗴𝗵𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗧𝗮𝘆𝗹𝗼𝗿 to talk about The Godfather of MMA and the man behind Ring of Combat.

Frankie has known Lou Neglia throughout his fighting career, but what stands out to him isn’t just Lou the promoter — it’s Lou the person.

“𝗜’𝘃𝗲 𝗻𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝘀𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗮 𝗳𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗺𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗮𝘀 𝘄𝗲𝗹𝗹 𝗮𝘀 𝗟𝗼𝘂 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀.”

Frankie believes part of that comes from Lou having been a fighter himself. He understands what it feels like to be on the other side — and he never forgot it.

And hearing 𝗧𝗮𝘆𝗹𝗼𝗿 talk about Lou shows that his impact goes well beyond the fighters and the cage. To her, Lou has become almost like an uncle.

“𝗜 𝗱𝗼𝗻’𝘁 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗱𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗶𝘁. 𝗜𝘁’𝘀 𝗮𝗺𝗮𝘇𝗶𝗻𝗴.”

Live from 𝗥𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗳 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗯𝗮𝘁 𝟵𝟭, we caught up with 𝗝𝗮𝘀𝗼𝗻 𝗥𝗲𝗱𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗵 𝗼𝗳 𝗧𝗼𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗠𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗰𝗲𝘀 — one of the executive producers who helped make The Godfather of MMA possible, along with his partner Val Pinkhasov.

Jason played a major role before a single frame was shot. After the idea for the documentary came together, he helped connect us with Lou Neglia Jr. — ultimately bringing Lou and me together to tell this story.

As Jason puts it:

“𝗡𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆𝗯𝗼𝗱𝘆 𝗹𝗼𝘃𝗲𝘀 𝗺𝗶𝘅𝗲𝗱 𝗺𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗮𝗿𝘁𝘀, 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝘁 𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗲𝗱, 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝘁 𝗰𝗮𝗺𝗲 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺.”

Couldn’t have said it better.

At 𝗥𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗳 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗯𝗮𝘁 𝟵𝟭, we caught up with Anthony Seccafico — one of the voices who helped us tell Louis Neglia’s story in The Godfather of MMA.

Anthony met Lou when he was just 9 years old. He was a troubled kid who loved fighting. Lou intimidated him enough that he initially quit — but he came back.

And never really left.

Today, Anthony is a Sensei with students of his own, passing down the lessons Lou gave him.

“It made me tougher. I’m a Sensei. I got my own students now… all because of Lou.”
And where better to talk about Lou’s legacy than at 𝗥𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗳 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗯𝗮𝘁, the promotion he built and the place where that legacy continues.

ROC 91 this past Friday was another massive success. Great fights with another packed house! I truly appreciate the consistency of our loyal fans that continue to follow Ring of Combat after all these years.

I have to say this…

Something very, very special happened on fight night. The fans in attendance and the many viewers on
Amazon Prime (one of the largest streaming services) witnessed one of the best MMA fights in the this sport. I would challenge anyone who disagrees . This past Friday, everyone witnessed exactly what the old saying means, a great fight has no loser.

This was a three round fight that ended as a draw but because it was a championship bout, it went to a fourth round. And even then, the judges gave a razor thin decision to one fighter, the present champion Robert Varricchio. That scorecard could never tell the whole story. There was no loser in the eyes of those who watched this tremendous bout.

Robert Varricchio and Ryan Gerena were two warriors when they stepped in the ROC cage and put everything on the line. In a tremendous display of skill, grit and heart, both refused to give an inch.

One walked away with the official victory but both walked away with something greater, the respect of everyone who witnessed the battle.

Congratulations to Robert and Ryan. My goal will be to get a rematch which I know the fans would love to see and then to get them to the UFC immediately. I’m sure they will join the great line of ROC fighters who have used ROC as a direct pipeline to the UFC. I’m sure Ryan and Robert will be next to join the great ROC alumni.
