And New Jersey helped make it happen.

Commissioner Larry Hazzard and Louis Neglia helped pave the way for sanctioned MMA, developing the rules and regulations that would change the sport forever.

Lou hosted an early sanctioned MMA bout on his kickboxing card. Then, in November 2000, the UFC brought a full event to New Jersey.

Before Matt Serra became a UFC World Champion… there were nights like this. 🥊

RARE, NEVER-BEFORE-SEEN FOOTAGE.

Pulled straight from the original Super VHS tapes, this is a young Matt Serra fighting at the legendary Vanderbilt in Long Island.

No HD cameras.
No social media.
Just old-school MMA, raw talent, and fighters looking to make a name for themselves.

This is the kind of footage that rarely sees the light of day — and a piece of MMA history worth preserving.

Who remembers the fight nights at the Vanderbilt? 👇

Came up short last weekend, fought a tough skilled opponent all respect to him. Grateful for the experience, I’m blessed to live this life. Couldn’t do this without my coaches and my team @longosmma , on to the next.

Before the sold-out arenas.
Before the million-dollar fights.
Before everyone knew the names.

There were small venues, hungry fighters, packed rooms—and people building a sport without knowing just how big it would eventually become.

We’re opening the archives to tell the stories of the fighters, promoters, coaches and pioneers who helped build modern MMA.
