LOST WEEKEND

Three days of some of the finest independent cinema from 1981 to now brought from all around the world to @mothership.marrickville in Sydney. We've got action spectacles, cutting edge queer cinema, defining horror masterpieces, peeks into the mind of American insanity, and the Sydney premieres of renowned international films.

All tickets just $15 and a full weekend pass for all 12 films is only $100, so there's no excuse not to lock yourself in a warehouse and gorge yourself on cinema for a whole weekend.

This Wednesday is the final screening of our Women Vs The World program, WOMAN DEMON HUMAN

Qiu Yun (Xu Shouli) is raised by her actor parents in a touring theatre troupe, struggling through the poverty of 1950s China and her own questions of gender identity as she breaks with tradition by playing male roles on stage in traditional opera.

Director Huang Shuqin’s pioneering work is one of the few films that explores the evolving role of women before the Cultural Revolution, a prismatic tale of performance with lavish, magical-realist staging.

We are back this Wednesday and ready to rumble with Kansas Bowling's CUDDLY TOYS

This white-coater meets girlblog, presented by the one and only Professor Kansas Bowling, is provocative and moving. In the old time format of a scare film about what your daughters might be up to, it uses a 16mm-shot “educational” framing device to explore visceral vignettes of girlhood. Scrutiny, second-guessing and shockumentary hold sway.

This Wednesday as part of Women Vs The World we have a disarmingly pragmatic portrait of the day-to-night shift in a Manhattan brothel, from the director of Born in Flames: WORKING GIRLS

Inspired by the experiences of her friends and collaborators who supported their artistic ambitions through sex work, Borden once again focuses her extraordinary lens on the intersections of race, class and gender in unified struggle. Arguably the most accurate screen depiction of the job’s rarely addressed tedium: a limbo world of intense encounters punctuated by endless smalltalk and ciggies.
