We empower the next generation of water literate leaders.

Our *After the Rain* Summer Studio has wrapped, and we are still glowing from the magic these kids created. 🌧️🎶

This summer, @rippleeffectnola and @NewVoicesNewOrleans joined forces at @KIPPNewOrleans schools to bring students a one-of-a-kind program where science meets song. Kids dove deep into stormwater flooding and rain through hands-on science experiments, choir, and original musical composition.

The family celebration was absolutely unforgettable. 60 family members packed the room to watch students perform songs AND debut their own original compositions. The energy was 🔥.

This was a pilot year, and it showed us just how powerful this work can be. We can't wait to come back next summer, bigger and better.

A huge thank you to our funder, the NAS Gulf Research Program 🙏, for making After the Rain possible. And endless love to the students and families from KIPP Leadership, KIPP Believe, and KIPP Central City Primary who showed up to learn, create, and shine. 🌈

This is just the beginning.

At Ripple Effect, we are inspired by the brilliance, resilience, curiosity of K-12 students.

And we believe in the transformative power of science teachers to ignite that curiosity and set students on a path of lifelong learning.

Our job is to give teachers everything THEY need, as learners, to teach their students about issues like stormwater flooding, coastal land loss, or hurricanes, with confidence.

A gift to Ripple Effect helps us pay competitive stipends for teachers to participate in summer and semester-long teaching fellowships. With Ripple Effect, they build science knowledge and grow in their capacity for advanced science-specific teaching practices.

Help us support our teachers on today’s #givenoladay 2025. Every drop makes a difference! by @rippleeffectnola

Kicking off our Ripple Effect hurricanes curriculum design process with a moveable feast of field based excursions with all our project partners. Yesterday included Bauou Sauvage, Lake Borge Surge Protection Barrier, and LUMCON Blue Works, and it continues today at LUMCON (Louisiana Universities Marine Consortium) Marine Center in Cocodrie. #ripplestowaves #rippleeffect #waterliteracy @houmalanguageproject @lumcon_ocean @ucarscied @coalitionforcs @collegiateacademies by @rippleeffectnola

Ripple Effect ran two workshop sessions at the National Science Teacher Association conference, which was held here in New Orleans! This was the first time our team presented at a national conference! We had great feedback from participants and even got a shout-out at one of the #nsta place-based learning sessions! Thank you to @official_nsta for hosting a great #nsta2024 conference. by @rippleeffectnola

Team work makes the dream work! Last night, Ripple Effect led a community engagement event as part of the Gentilly Resilience District project. Our plan? Teach an actual lesson from our high school #Ripples2Waves stormwater flooding unit, in which students model our drainage system using buckets, clear tubing, and giant plastic syringes. Oh! And water, lots of it. Folks got a little wet but it was so much fun and the “What We Figured Out” anchor chart that community members made together was just 😍. Such a wonderful and insightful group of people. Thank you to the @city_of_new_orleans @resilientnola and @waggonnerball for inviting us out and letting us bring a little Ripple Effect magic (some call it “unhinged sparkle”) to the water conversation happening in our City. @stem_aficionado by @rippleeffectnola

Some quick snaps of today’s water quality testing and a tour of the Houma Navigation Canal with our partners on the Ripple to Waves curriculum and teaching project. Here’s the curriculum design team at the Louisiana University Marine Consortium, (a.k.a. LUMCON) alongside BSCS Science Learning and Collegiate Academies educators. Our ninth grade environmental science curriculum is moving ahead at full speed with the stormwater unit being piloted in four teachers classrooms right now and the dead zone unit beginning development now. This unit, about the Gulf of Mexico dead zone, is the second of three LSSS aligned, inquiry-based units and is part of a larger effort with the Tulane Bywater Institute, and the Lower 9th Ward CSED, with generous funding from the National Academies Gulf Research Program. #ripplestowaves #rippleeffectnola @collegiateacademies @lumcon_ocean by @rippleeffectnola

Jazmine and Loren, two former Ripple Effect fellows from our Puddles to Floods summer teaching institute. Both are teachers at @kippneworleans. Here they are acting like seasoned science educators as they explain part of the storyline in our upcoming @openscied elementary field test. We are so blessed to have the opportunity to work with such positive, smart, and creative teachers like these two. by @rippleeffectnola

Last minute at-home preparations for @openscied professional development with @kippneworleans elementary teachers, starting this week! Is this kiddo too young to start investigating forces and motion using balanced and moving sculptures? :) I think not…. Also, MAJOR PROPS to the curriculum developers of the third grade and fourth grade elementary units, our friends at BSCS Science Learningand @rippleeffectnola co-conspirators working with us to bring high quality, student driven science learning about local water issues into k-12 public school classrooms. by @rippleeffectnola

Some scenes from the #RipplestoWaves high school curriculum and teaching project. 9th grade environmental science teachers from #collegiateacademies high schools have been hard at work this week learning and practicing a 9 week instructional unit about New Orleans flooding. With coaching support from RE, teachers will field test this curriculum with students this fall semester. The entire unit is based on the #openscied instructional model and was developed in partnership with BSCS Science Learning, who were part of the original development team behind OpenSciEd. OSE is a high quality, open-source curriculum that embodies our goals of providing equitable, student-driven science learning in classrooms across the Greater New Orleans region. The Ripples to Waves project is made possible through funding from the National Academies Gulf Research Program. The curriculum and teaching is part of a larger region wide partnership between Ripple Effect, Tulane ByWater Institute, and the Lower 9th Ward CSED that includes a summer research internship program in addition to school-based daily classroom instruction. Stay tuned for more updates and results of the field test this fall!! @lower9_csed @bywatertulane by @rippleeffectnola
