Congratulations to Interior Architecture faculty members Elizabeth Debs and David Tomás De Celis on their participation in the nearhodeisland (NEARI) Bread & Roses exhibition!

Established to celebrate and promote the creative practices of NEARI members, the Bread and Roses Project takes its name from a slogan popularized during the 1912 Lawrence textile strike, when immigrant women workers advocated for fair wages and humane working conditions.

The exhibition reflects on the enduring significance of this movement, reminding us that workers deserve not only fair wages and dignity in the workplace, but also opportunities for creativity, joy, and personal fulfillment.

GRAD EVENT ALERT:
What happens when we look at the space around the art, rather than only at the art itself? Join RISD Museum Graduate Assistant Gerald Sastra INTAR ‘27 for an interactive investigation of Ways of Looking, where we’ll move, observe, question, and unpack the design decisions that shape the gallery experience. Come ready to look closely and perhaps leave seeing museum spaces a little differently.

This past weekend, on October 4th and 5th, Sustainability Lab travelled out to Vermont to visit a Mine and a Quarry. At the Mine, students had the opportunity to meet with a staff member, as he led the class on a two hour tour of the mine and its operations (no photos were permitted).

Afterwards, the class caravanned to an old abandoned quarry which has since been turned into a local swimming hole.

This trip allowed students to get close and personal with materials they will be experimenting with this year, their natural qualities and their origins. So fun! taken in Vermont U.S.A by @risdintar

I can’t help bragging about my stellar @risdintar students and their becoming. This summer I visited in Brussels @arianevd Ariane van Dievoet in the gallery @augustagallery she opened with her sister. Several pieces of Ariane’s work were on show amongst other amazing designers. I was completely taken by the simplicity and soulfulness of Ariane’s artistic project. Attached to the memory of things, she works with recycled material and has a deep connection with stones. Her repurposing is raw, but also infinitely sensitive. Minimal and fragmented, her work in a soft palette speaks of strength and resilience. It is quiet, but not silent; there is a beautiful humming of the present meeting the past. #proudprofessor love you Ariane ! @risdalumni taken in Brussels, Belgium by @risdintar

Congratulations to our alumnus Junho Choi and his studio @twopointzero2.0 for being featured for their restaurant design @moono.nyc in the New York Times!

We had the honor of hearing from Junho last year in one of our Lecture Series where he talked about this project (among many other beautiful designs). We were all touched by his personal approach to design and the sophisticated way he approaches adaptive reuse. Junho and his studio are becoming such a big influence on the New York Korean dining scene and we are so excited to see him get the recognition he deserves!

Our first pin-up of the semester in my Advanced Studio, Exhibition in Sequence, in RISD’s Interior Architecture ENE program.
For Project 01, I asked my students to observe people in a public space and translate what they saw into a sequential narrative—using framing, point of view, movement, and storytelling to explore the relationship between people, behavior, and space. The project introduces comics as a way of seeing—and eventually, as a methodology for thinking through and designing exhibition experiences.
Thank you to Ayako Maruyama @instayako for joining us for the crit. It was exciting to see the wide range of approaches to the prompt—from observational narratives to more speculative, surreal, and unexpected interpretations of everyday spatial experience.

This post features work from every student enrolled in the studio. Thank you for trusting the process!

2026 INTAR Summer Program

Changing Room
“Working with wood as our primary material, we became interested in the idea of a changing room not only as a place to change clothes, but as a temporary space where the body, mood, posture, and perception can shift.
Our process began by collecting discarded and leftover wood from around us and the surrounding neighborhood. Rather than standardizing these pieces, we worked with their different dimensions, surfaces, ages, and conditions. Through testing joints, rotation, tension, balance, and methods of assembly, we developed
a structure that could move and change rather than remain completely fixed.”

Talking to the Tube

“Talking tubes are an early technology for carrying the human voice across distance. We created two private conversation booths on opposing walls to allow users to have an intimate conversation within the gallery.”

Translation in Adaptation +Reuse / Wood:

“Designed as a dynamic dining, gathering, and presentation space, the ability to move and adjust components creates comfort, inclusivity, and playfulness, allowing for versatile use. This adaptability not only enhances the experience within the Sol Koffler Gallery but also extends the assembly’s functionality beyond this specific location.”
