Current @risdintar seniors Kevin Xu and Yingqi Gu were awarded the prestigious Angelo Donghia Foundation Student Scholarship in Interior Design, which will help them complete their final year at RISD in the Interior Architecture department. Swipe through for a look at their projects. Shown: Kevin’s proposal integrates museum programming with affordable student housing, introducing new cultural infrastructure supporting educational access and improved living conditions. Kevin’s adaptive reuse intervention focuses on an eight-story primary building paired with lower surrounding structures. Yingqi’s project proposes a mixed-use building that combines the residential component with small-scale production spaces. Responding to Providence’s post-industrial context, Yingqi’s project explores the boundary between production and domesticity and aims to create a space where displaced workers can adapt existing skills into new forms of small-scale and flexible, individual or collective production. GRAD EVENT ALERT: What happens when we look at the space around the art, rather than only at the art itself? Join RISD Museum Graduate Assistant Gerald Sastra INTAR ‘27 for an interactive investigation of Ways of Looking, where we’ll move, observe, question, and unpack the design decisions that shape the gallery experience. Come ready to look closely and perhaps leave seeing museum spaces a little differently. Link to sign up is in our bio Thursday, October 15 | 6:30 PM Location: RISD Museum | Cafe Pearl Entrance

An exploration of complex geometry using Rhino NURBS curves to generate organic forms, contours, and layered profiles. The geometry was sliced into individual sections and fabricated using form-shaped board, with a central circular opening serving as an alignment guide for the stacked pieces. The study investigates how digital curves translate into physical form through repetition, materiality, and assembly. #risd #intar #photography #lasercutting #formexploration

I can’t help bragging about my stellar @risdintar students and their becoming. This summer I visited in Brussels @arianevd Ariane van Dievoet in the gallery @augustagallery she opened with her sister. Several pieces of Ariane’s work were on show amongst other amazing designers. I was completely taken by the simplicity and soulfulness of Ariane’s artistic project. Attached to the memory of things, she works with recycled material and has a deep connection with stones. Her repurposing is raw, but also infinitely sensitive. Minimal and fragmented, her work in a soft palette speaks of strength and resilience. It is quiet, but not silent; there is a beautiful humming of the present meeting the past. #proudprofessor love you Ariane ! @risdalumni

Canadian Architect Op-Ed: Towards adaptive architecture Adaptive reuse in architecture, with its varied definitions and practices, encourages and recognizes these inevitable changes in capacity, materials, and even typology. By Kitt Man And Romy Poletti On Sept 16, 2026 On May 20-22, 2026 a diverse group of leading scholars, practitioners, and contributors from around the world gathered at Carleton University – both in-person and virtually. They considered the various paradigmatic shifts necessary to change the attitude in architecture from one that favours designing for new construction, into one that encourages reusing existing built environments and designing with future adaptability in mind. Organized by Azrieli School of Architecture and Urbanism professors Federica Goffi, Mariana Esponda and Mario Santana Quintero, this conference was two years in the making, and is part of a larger federally funded research partnership between 14 Canadian universities. The Carleton University team aims to improve the quality of the built environment by redefining architectural design through equity and lived experiences—one of the overarching objectives of the conference. The event organization was made possible by the support of CR|PT|C, ASAU, CU, CIMS, FED Carleton University & CUASA. We especially grateful to our sponsors: ORSA, CAHP | ACECP, John G. Cooke & Associates Ltd. & Routledge Books We also would like to thank the Sprott Business School of Carleton University for hosting the event in the Nicol Building and the Carleton students who, in different roles, supported the realization of (from) Adaptive Reuse (to) Adaptive Architecture, our esteemed keynote speakers & presenters. A changing room is a space to step away, remove a layer, and prepare to return. But what happens in the quiet moment in between? Changing Room explores the room as a space between identities, where both the person and the architecture are allowed to shift. From an adaptive reuse perspective, the wood was sourced from a wood-lot waste pile and scraps from the woodshop. Each piece was carefully disassembled and reinterpreted, carrying its own history, imperfections, and traces of use. The structure was intentionally assembled through on-site, critical design decisions, responding directly to the material’s existing conditions, dimensions, weight, and form. Delicate connections allow pieces to shift, rotate, and meet differently, keeping the installation deliberately unresolved. As light and shadows move through the structure, so does the experience of the space. You enter, you change, and you leave. The room remains, though not quite as it was. Neither do you. A big thank you to our professors Ece Yetim @eceytm , Markus Berger @therepairatelier and Francesca Liuni for guiding us through the process, and to my team @artbymaithili @dhrumini.patel @shixiaobao33 @abigailaelemus for making this project such an exciting, collaborative, and genuinely fun learning experience. #risd #summerprogram #adaptivereuse #foundmaterials #creativecommunity

2026 INTAR Summer Program Changing Room “Working with wood as our primary material, we became interested in the idea of a changing room not only as a place to change clothes, but as a temporary space where the body, mood, posture, and perception can shift. Our process began by collecting discarded and leftover wood from around us and the surrounding neighborhood. Rather than standardizing these pieces, we worked with their different dimensions, surfaces, ages, and conditions. Through testing joints, rotation, tension, balance, and methods of assembly, we developed a structure that could move and change rather than remain completely fixed.” Students: Abigail Lemus @abigail.0021 Maithili Rajput @artbymaithili Yafang Shi @shixiaobao33 Dhrumini Patel @dhrumini.patel Isha Sarode @ishaasarode Instructors: Francesca Liuni Markus Berger Ece Yetim TAs: Szewai Hong: @szewaih Nawal Urooj
