How can abstraction and color communicate political ideas?

Venezuelan artist Elsa Gramcko’s work from the late 1950s and 1960s used non-referential forms to explore the political and social realities of her country. In this work, the central black form evokes Venezuela’s dependence on crude-oil extraction, an industry that fueled modernization while also contributing to political and economic instability it.

October’s birth flower is the marigold, a flower that symbolizes warmth and creativity. This William Morris-inspired botanical design features the African marigold, which is actually native to Mexico and Central America. Its large pom-pom-like blooms are perfect for celebrating a fall birthday! 🏵️

Last weekend to see "The Artistry and Reunion of Two Surimono Albums!"

Meet the artist behind a series of illustrations featured in the exhibition: Zimo Yang (RISD Illustration, 2026) @zimowashere interned in our Asian Art Department where she spent time closely studying Japanese prints, from their inscriptions to the material qualities of the paper.

That close looking inspired a series of illustrations demonstrating the woodblock printing process on view in the exhibition as well as a personal project featured here that captures her experience working in the museum.

See Zimo’s illustrations–and the exhibition– before it closes this Sunday, Oct 4! taken in RISD Museum by @risdmuseum

We think #NationalLobsterDay should be a regional holiday in New England, just saying 🦞

But this isn't quite the lobster we know in RI. The spiny lobster pictured in this 1820s Japanese woodblock print is a symbol of longevity. Its long whiskers represent wishes for a long life as part of Japanese New Year traditions.

Happy Birthday, Dale Chihuly! ✨ Today we're celebrating the artist and RISD alum who helped establish the Glass Department at @risd1877, where he taught until 1983.

Look up in the stairwell and you’ll find Gilded Frost and Jet Chandelier, a mesmerizing constellation of 196 pieces of blown glass. Frosty forms spiral and radiate outward, catching the ambient light and transforming the space around them. Check it out during your next visit!
