Tomorrow! We are screening Maintenance Artist at the RISD Museum and you are invited ✨

This award-winning new documentary from filmmaker Toby Perl Freilich chronicles the life and work of groundbreaking public artist Mierle Laderman Ukeles, the first artist-in-residence with the New York City Sanitation Department. Ukeles’s work invites us to consider whose labor is visible and valued, and how we can better care for the earth and one another.

I’m excited that we’re bringing the film to Providence and honored to introduce the program tomorrow night. Join us after the screening for a conversation with an amazing group of artists and scholars — Lu Heintz @luli_la_la , Assistant Professor of Open Media in the Department of Fine Arts at Brandeis University, Liz Maynard @theartofheartfelt , Senior Lecturer in Modern and Contemporary Art and Theory in the Department of Theory and History of Art and Design at RISD, Becci Davis @bdavissynergy , Assistant Teaching Professor in the Department of Visual Art, Brown University, and Xander Marro and Pippi Zornoza, Co-Directors of Dirt Palace Projects @fataleggs @weddingcakehouse_residencies

Thank you to @risdmuseum for hosting this screening is partnership with RISD’s Theory and History of Art and Design (THAD) Department and Center for Community Partnerships, along with Dirt Palace Projects @dirtpalace

As the 2026-2028 Faculty Fellow @risdmuseum in the Costume + Textile Department, my research pulls on many threads including the origins of RISD’s Costume Design program (2) - now known as @risdapparel . This includes early-20th century performance studies at RISD, the forgotten powerhouse women who created fashion studies at RISD, and the intriguing hidden origins of #RISDMuseum textile + fashion collection.

In the 1930s-40s, Professor + Boston-based designer #GraceRlipley accumulated large collections of textiles swatches from the late-19th to early-20th century for students to study fiber techniques, colorways, and motifs. I spent an afternoon viewing these swatches kept in an enormous ledger labeled “Pattern Book: Edmund Barnes”. Some of my favorite pages are the ‘ghost prints’ left from a century of textile swatches (7). Stay tuned for what’s next.

Just a little reminder that women have been creating incredible spaces for centuries. 💅🏼

Fun fact: The RISD Museum was co-founded in 1877 by Helen Rowe Metcalf and a group of women in Providence, Rhode Island, who used funds raised through the Women’s Centennial Commission to help establish BOTH the Rhode Island School of Design and its museum. An incredible museum worth visiting if you’ve never been!!!!

Over 140 years later, their vision has grown into one of the largest art museums in the country. AND RHODE ISLANDERS, IT’S LITERALLY IN OUR BACK YARD 🥲 how freaking cool?!

Women supporting women, investing in art, and quite literally building spaces for future generations to enjoy. We love to see it. 👏🏼

Anyway, just your daily reminder that women have always been doing cool shit.

GRAD EVENT ALERT:
What happens when we look at the space around the art, rather than only at the art itself? Join RISD Museum Graduate Assistant Gerald Sastra INTAR ‘27 for an interactive investigation of Ways of Looking, where we’ll move, observe, question, and unpack the design decisions that shape the gallery experience. Come ready to look closely and perhaps leave seeing museum spaces a little differently.
