Meet Anna Kosinski (she/her), a senior in Textiles, with a concentration in Nature-Culture and Sustainability Studies (NCSS).

What question are you investigating in your thesis work?

(sink)seeksowswallow(ing) through mutual agency to all, propagating towards an enchanted vanishing point within the fantasization of realness. At the portal, the invisible becomes visible, hauntings speak, magic seeps, and we become free. Eroded and sown through sunken secrecy, one(s’) twist(ing) cyclically to cling to (trace) in permanence that’s rooted in continuous ephemerality, changing within context. An estuary of both community repair - honoring bonding, clinging, and longing- and ecological repair - seeking remembrance and exchange, an attention to the mud and each other.

Meet Nathaniel Campos (he/him), a senior in Textiles, with a concentration in Computation, Technology, and Culture (CTC).

What question are you investigating in your thesis work?

My degree project culminated in a series of textiles designed for apparel focusing on queer expressions of adaptation and control as inspired by the socio-environmental climate of my home, South Florida. I wanted to explore teetering the line between natural and constructed environments, moving through systems of fantasy, control, desire, and excess. I flow between different hand and industrial processes to manifest tension in the fabric’s surface which invoke layers of heat, wetness, decay, and movement. I hope through this exploration we begin to understand identity and environment as a continually shifting perception, which can be harnessed for queer power.

What are your plans after graduation?

I just spent the last 2 weeks at Penland School of Craft in North Carolina for an experimental weaving course with John Paul Morabito and now I hope to grow my practice as an artist, craftsperson, and designer!

Meet Meri Sanders (they/she), a senior in Textiles, with a concentration in Nature-Culture Sustainability Studies (NCSS).

What question are you investigating in your thesis work?

So long as I have been a maker, my practice has situated itself around the act of storytelling. For my thesis, I developed my own process of writing in tandem with sculptural textile installation. My work started with a close look at Hans Christian Andersen’s tale titled, What the Moon Saw— this series consists of thirty-three vignettes where he traveled the world observing the human condition and writing about it from the moon’s perspective. I began crafting my own stories as a means of reflecting on unseen labor, acts of care, repair, and community that I have witnessed or experienced firsthand throughout my upbringing. This practice resulted in four total stories: What The Moon Saw, Tending To The Orchards, Letters From A Birdwatcher, and The Great Big House.

Meet Vince Zhang (he/him), a senior in Textiles.

What question are you investigating in your thesis work?

I’m investigating how byproducts generated within office environments can reflect the awkward transition into professional adulthood and highly structured systems. Through textile processes, material remnants, and disrupted professional garments, I explore how small traces, accidents, and moments of misalignment reveal forms of individuality that resist being fully absorbed into systems of productivity and standardization.

Meet Kara Petrosino (she/her), a senior in Textiles, with a concentration in Literary Arts and Studies (LAS).

What question are you investigating in your thesis work?

My thesis project is a textile-based film, rendered through stop-motion animation and live-action puppetry. Reflecting on the textiles that bore significance in my own childhood, I wanted to explore how soft landscapes and characters could, through their material specificity, be evocative of a particular nostalgic place, time, and frame of mind.

Meet Zach Kim (he/him), a senior in Textiles.

What question are you investigating in your thesis work?

My degree project work has been focused on how to use textile to create an aesthetic language to talk about the ephemeral nature of memory. I’m curious in what is gained and lost when image is translated and manipulated across digital and analog mediums and how it reflects what we remember, the importance and care put into what we choose to archive, and the way it ultimately still fades no matter how perfectly we try to hold onto it. I hope the work communicates care, my love of weaving, and how bridging of pattern, imagery, and light can connect physical places, and times with abstract qualities of displacement and recollection.

Meet Crystal Han (she/her), a senior in Textiles.

What question are you investigating in your thesis work?

What will roam and grow on the Earth thousands of years in the future, as plants and animals continue to evolve alongside human development? Invasive species, like Japanese knotweed, expand and stretch into bulbous forms. Sea creatures develop plastic skin and lurid stripes to camouflage in oceans of textile waste. Woolly beasts become overgrown, covering their beautiful patterns underneath.

These beings live not in our current world, but in the space where inquiry meets intuition, and emotional responses allow us to approach other living beings with a perspective where artists, activists, and scientists naturally converge.

Meet Ada Franey (she/her), a senior in Textiles.

What question are you investigating in your thesis work?

My degree project is an investigation of the use of textiles as archival documents through the replication and abstraction of specific and mundane spaces. Whether this is the ceiling of a bedroom, or a jacket hung on the back of a door, I hope my audience will think twice about spatial experiences they may otherwise have not considered, and connect that reconsideration to a broader thoughtfulness of day-to-day life.

What are your plans after graduation?

I will be working as a textile designer at J.Crew this summer, and then returning in the fall to work for a Providence-based knitwear company.

Meet Yanhao (Shirley) Chen (she/her), a senior in Textiles.

What question are you investigating in your thesis work?

On a cruise, looking out at the ocean. Twirled in an illusion of universality, grasping on hints of everywhere and everything as an observer. The aesthetics of a taste, trying to reformulate my surroundings, a post internet automatism. Ridiculousness, the imitation and miming of flamboyance, overwriting an observation, (false) beliefs of glamour and extravagance. I’m focused on creating a sense of leisure, sauntering in a nonsensical environment where each form is connected, looking askance at it.

Meet Ethan Lam (he/they), a senior in Textiles with a concentration in Drawing.

What question are you investigating in your thesis work?

My practice has always explored ideas of nostalgia, fantasy, and femininity as ways of preserving emotional sensitivity and wonder into adulthood. I draw a lot of inspiration from early internet aesthetics, kawaii culture, childhood drawings, and fantasies of the Rococo period as a means of investigating how cuteness and softness can function as ways of rebellion rather than superficial decoration.

For my thesis specifically, I’ve grown to enjoy many repetitive textile processes, such as knitting, lace-making, large-scale drawing, and hand embroidery. By combining handwork with odd material combinations and ornamental excess, my collection attempts to create a way of looking at the world rooted in curiosity, tenderness, and belief in magic.

What are your plans after graduation?
