In this monumental 30-by-20-foot patchwork, I transform discarded indigenous African textiles into a powerful narrative of rebirth, resilience, and revival. Each fragment carries a memory, finding new purpose through unity and creative reconstruction. By reimagining these materials, I celebrate African textile heritage while exploring materiality, freedom, fashion, and sustainability. This work is a testament to the beauty of renewal, demonstrating how what society discards can be reclaimed to create something extraordinary, meaningful, and enduring.

Before Textiles majors at RISD can begin designing and creating original work, they must learn to differentiate between the fibers and dyes at their disposal and build a working knowledge of how to use them.

Sophomores in @risdtextiles course “Fibers and Dyeing” are investigating a wide variety of fibers and processes, including spinning, yarn construction, and natural and synthetic dyes.

Dahlia @dahlia13 from @risdtextiles @risd1877 is a textile designer who explores the relationship between seeing and perceiving through her own experience of growing up with amblyopia. By playing with the gap between sight and touch, she creates work that invites us to experience familiar things in new ways.

Ep. 217 Artist talk with @dahlia13

Dahlia Aggarwal is a textile designer and RISD MFA Textiles graduate. Inspired by rocks, grass, and natural landscapes, she uses weaving and felting to explore the gap between what we see and what we actually feel.

By transforming familiar natural surfaces into unexpected tactile experiences, her work invites us to rethink how we perceive and interact with materials.

Yik Heng Lee is an interdisciplinary artist born in Singapore, based in Providence, Rhode Island. His work explores the grid as structure for carrying narrative.

Bathtub is one of four pieces that explore the communicative capacity of textiles and the grid as a narrative structure, drawing on Rosalind Krauss’ writing on the grid. Each depicts a charged domestic space—drawn from present-day queer film stills (Call Me by Your Name (2017), Queer (2024), All of Us Strangers (2023), History of Sound (2025)) coalesced with photographs of my own lived space—to sketch the quotidian life of an imagined young queer man. The Bathtub piece grew out of the bathroom scenes between Oliver and Elio in Call Me by Your Name, combined with a photo of a bathtub seen on the RISD campus.

Thank you @pvdartclub for inviting me to teach Shibori at your beautiful studios! A creative and fun group of artists joined me for a very full day of dyeing with Indigo in the Masiello Studio of this club founded in 1880. We learn 8 different techniques and created four projects each, breaking for a delicious lunch in the Founders Room.
Bonus for me: the Club is right next to @rhodeislandschoolofdesign_ where I trained for a summer when I was just 16. Ah, sweet memories…

I love Miami, it shaped me in so many ways and I’m so proud to have touched so many incredible people over the years in fashion and art and just life in general.

🏆Best Fashion Designer

Karelle Levy has been making Miami weirder and better-dressed for nearly three decades. The Paris-born, Miami-raised designer started her label straight out of school in the late 1990s, cutting her teeth as an artist at the Bakehouse Art Complex in 2001 before building a studio presence in Wynwood, then the Art Center South Beach, and eventually a decade-long home at Miami Ironside. She founded KRELwear after studying textile design at RISD, where the costumes she knit for her own art performances became the seed of a full fashion label. Her process is unlike most: garments are digitally programmed and knit on Maggie, a Shima Seiki industrial machine, then hand-finished in-house using mill-end yarns and zero-waste ethics using colors that run from sun-bleached tropical to glow-in-the-dark. The result is one-of-a-kind, inclusive knitwear with her signature “Toobular” construction designed to fit a wide range of bodies without compromise. Her creations have adorned the likes of Nicki Minaj, Alanis Morissette and Latin Grammy performers over the years. She also launched her Stitch N Bitch community gatherings at The Standard in 2009, turning her studio into a creative hub as much as a shop. Though recently relocated to Savannah, she remains a fixture in the city’s creative life and continues to come back regularly. Miami fashion hasn’t quite caught up with her yet.
