Freshly kissed by a man she called Bhaiya, an eleven-year-old girl believed she had fallen in love. Now an adult, returning to the memory of pleasure, she finds herself in pain. Slipping into the past, where the bitter tasted sweet, and desire and danger appeared like twins, she stares blankly at us and asks: what does it all mean?

In 'Seconds Before Coming', Rishika Kaushik (@rishikakaushikk) guides the audience along her past selves, wading through memory with curiosity and sometimes, laughter — toward a formative experience with the person who groomed her. Embodying these memories through presence, a thing most theatre-makers chase at drama school, was the real challenge. But in developing this play, surrendering to this state of being rather than manufacturing it took many iterations. Comedy made space for these iterations and rewrites, engaging the protagonist and audience into an unusually intimate exchange.

as august winds down we make way for our next installment of strangr dreams at the barsati w @rishikakaushikk’s ‘seconds before coming’, a biting comic🎖 one-woman show about a woman who reminisces about her eleven-year-old self being kissed👒 by someone she calls “bhaiya”.

created & performed by rishika kaushik, the act is co-directed & dramaturged by anirudh ‘rudy’ nair.

in classic dramatic irony🐇 the protagonist slips into the past to navigate the paradox of sweet danger & bitter desire, whilst turning to the audience to help her make sense of it all.

cu for a laugh & cry & a cocktail menu w @cointreau by our bar team.
