The last time I saw a tiger in Ghodadaman was more than 16 years ago, when I watched “Kallu” emerge from the Ghodadaman cave.
The last drive of my most recent trip to Bandhavgarh turned out to be absolutely magical. After sighting the Chakradhara sub-adult cub resting near the Chakradhara meadows, we moved towards Badi Gufa and then on to Ghodadaman. Pinku, my jeep driver and naturalist, told me that “Samrat” had last been sighted in the park about eight days earlier and that there was a high probability of his returning to the area. We decided to take a chance.
As we reached Ghodadaman, we spotted the fresh pugmarks of a male tiger. As we drove ahead, a peacock suddenly flew across our path, giving frantic alarm calls. Then I saw one of the most majestic, handsome, and powerfully built tigers I have ever encountered. It was a sight that nourished my soul and at the same time gave me goosebumps He crossed the road, gave us a snarl, and disappeared into the very same cave where I had seen Kallu all those years ago.
