It seems to me that ‘fun’ is actually a sign that we are doing something right, and that things are not fundamentally ’serious’- the link above is to a ‘waffle’ I wrote a few months ago, where Taoism meets neuroscience. :) I see a lot of people here taking this whole universe (and themselves) WAY too seriously. What do you think? by @rising_crane

My Kung Fu senior brother Lau Hon Ting, and his son Lau Ho Wing, have done a lot of work to promote the Hap Ga style in the SanShui district of Guangzhou (三水) including teaching in schools, and running competitions. Here is a new video just released on Chinese social media. (Subtitles and any mistakes are mine) #hapkyun #hopgar #whitecrane #risingcrane by @rising_crane

I’m not a fan of AI videos (or Mandarin language for Hap Ga) but this is a nice story that some of you may not know about my teacher’s father. It was posted on Chinese social media, so I made some English subtitles. by @rising_crane

The ‘Hap Ga Sword’ is an interesting weapon- it contains movement from the straight sword, sabre, and 2 handed sabre. It has always been one of my favourite sets to practice! This performance is done in a contemporary style, using the traditional set. Modern competitions in China have somewhat changed the ‘flavour’ of the art- geared more towards performance and athleticism. Great for the younger students! But traditional kung fu has many facets: art, sport, health, pets development and, of course, fighting. The techniques are preserved, but it is the training methods that determine which direction a student wants to go. by @rising_crane

In MMA or wrestling, the ‘underhook’ is the dominant position. However, in an environment where there are weapons present, the ‘overhook’ has the advantage of controlling the weapon better, and setting up various ’disarm’ techniques. Don’t take my word for it! Get some soft sticks and play (but imagine they are real weapons, don’t stand and trade hits!)- safe, fun and practical. Combat sports are the best test of skills, and produce high level athletes, but let’s prioritise the moves regular people can use successfully against aggressive attackers in a self defence scenario, whilst ensuring the sparring is safe and fun. Then we will enjoy getting hundreds of rounds of sparring- which is the recipe for developing functional skill. by @rising_crane
