Risk/Reward continues our ground-breaking “Presents” program with two audience-favorite artists premiering full shows in Portland, with local musical prodigy Joe Kye and dance pioneer Shannon Stewart paired together for a beautiful double-bill of new work.

Shannon Stewart will present the full-length version of her virtuosic solo “river, river, river”, a flowing dance solo combined with a rushing monologue that delves into the after-effects of disaster. Joe Kye will present the world premiere of “through-lineage”, his musical journey into his grandfather’s history in North Korea and beyond.

Presented in Reed College’s excellent Greenwood Theater, these fully-realized pieces will push the boundaries of performance as they blend dance, music, film, theater, and storytelling. Tickets start at $10, no one turned away due to lack of funds.

A week before my first one-person show premieres.

Between memorizing an eight-page script and picking up a US Army mine crate from 1953 to use as a prop, I still had time to lay down some violin for @cuchulainmusic’s new album.

What makes Through-Lineage different from previous shows? The process of creating it has been filled with intention and determination. My inner perfectionist-procrastinator usually has me leaning on my improv skills for every performance. Chalk it up to age or four years of therapy—I’ve deliberately folded meaning into every moment of this show. I can’t wait to share it with you. Many thanks to James Mapes at @riskrewardpdx for walking with me through this process.

CLASS WITH SHANNON STEWART!

Countertechnique Class
Saturday, October 24th, 12 - 1:30pm

What is countertechnique? Within a clear structure of exercises, a Countertechnique class enables dancers to move bigger, more fluidly and more spatially. This class is suitable for intermediate/advanced dancers with experience in modern, contemporary, jazz, and ballet. Check out @countertechnique on IG for examples and information.

Saturday, October 24th, 12p to 1:30p

(Use the West Parking Lot, off SE 28th Ave between Steele and Woodstock)

Shannon Stewart is a choreographer and assistant professor of contemporary dance specializing in choreography, release-based techniques, Countertechnique®, floorwork, somatic awareness, the Gyrotonic Expansion System®, and improvisation. They have taught contemporary classes in communities, festivals, and universities for over 15 years, and had their work for stage, film and galleries presented in North America and Europe. Shannon grew up in Washington and lived in Seattle until 2015. She is currently on faculty at the University of Kansas where she researches sustainable dance practices and performance entanglements with the natural world. She lives the rest of the time in Detroit, Michigan (Waawiyatanong) with her partner and dog, Dottie. ig @thesurrealshannonstewart
