RIT Receives NASA Support for Community-Driven Remote Sensing Experiments

🍾Exciting news!

NASA’s Commercial Satellite Data Acquisition (CSDA) Program has awarded RIT’s Digital Imaging and Remote Sensing Laboratory a three-year grant to support future ROCX remote sensing field campaigns and the public dissemination of open remote sensing datasets.

As remote sensing technologies continue to advance, high-quality, ground-truthed datasets are essential for sensor validation, algorithm development, research, and education.

This award builds on the success of ROCX 2025, which brought together:

 ✅ 75 participants

✅ 24 organizations

✅ 6 countries

✅ 19 ground experiments

✅ 14 ground instruments

✅ 8 UAV platforms

✅ 2 aircraft

✅ 7 satellite platforms

Rehman Eon and Aaron Gerace (Imaging Science research faculty) have received a $2.2 million NASA award to continue RIT’s and NASA’s decades-long partnership with the Landsat program!

This is a “NASA/USGS program that began in 1972 and provides the longest continuous space-based record of Earth’s land in existence.”

“Landsat 10 will continue the program’s legacy of observing, managing, and adapting to Earth’s changing surface. The mission helps scientists study water quality and aquatic health assessments; crop productions and soil conservation; forest management and monitoring; climate and snow dynamics research; and mineral mapping based on thermal emissivity.”

Congratulations Eon and Aaron!!! by @ritimagingsci

🌞🌏NASA sure was good to Imaging Science this year. Leiani (Imaging Science undergrad) spent her summer in Pasadena, CA working at NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

Her project focused on modernizing and expanding the capabilities of the MISR INteractive eXplorer (MINX).

📸 MISR is a SpectroRadiometer that views Earth from 9 different cameras, allowing for scientists to determine things like smoke plume heights, wildfire activity, and aerosol properties. She was focused on converting the existing MINX software from IDL to Python and developing a more modular framework that has the capability to support additional products and data.
