For decades, RIT has partnered with the Landsat program to help scientists study the Earth’s changing surface.

Landsat is the longest continuous space-based record of Earth’s land in existence! Data from Landsat gives information essential for making informed decisions about Earth’s resources and environment.

RIT researchers have a working history with Landsat dating back to 1981 when @nasa funded RIT’s first major research grant that helped establish the imaging science program. The @ritimagingsci Chester F. Carlson Center for Imaging Science offered the first imaging science program in the U.S. and is currently the only formal imaging science program in the nation.

Underscoring the value of imaging science, NASA has awarded RIT a $2.2 million grant to continue the collaboration. @ritscience research faculty are leading the project that will prepare Landsat 10, formerly known as Landsat Next, for a successful deployment in 2031.

The mission helps scientists study water quality and aquatic health assessments; crop productions and soil conservation; forest management and monitoring; climate and snow dynamics research; and mineral mapping based on thermal emissivity.

The Landsat Instrument Suite (LandIS) sensors differ significantly from previous sensors used for Landsat missions as it will acquire image data across 26 spectral bands at a higher spatial resolution. To ensure that LandIS has ultimate image quality to achieve its science objectives, the RIT team will provide critical analyses through targeted simulation and modeling studies to help the Landsat program make informed decisions regarding the LandIS sensor.

Research starts on day one for our imaging science students.

Through the RIT Freshman Imaging Project, students like Luke Collison and Scarlett Higgins use imaging technology to create 3D models of a 4,000 year old artifact from the RIT Carey Collection to support archaeological research.

“Your Perspective Matters” 🎓✨

An unforgettable moment delivering a speech in the commencement ceremony of College of Science (CoS) at the Rochester Institute of Technology, in front of thousands, sharing the stage with incredible professors, and celebrating with friends, mentors, faculty, and loved ones.

Honored to be selected as the Graduate Delegate representing the College of Science(CoS) across six departments and to receive the diploma on behalf of the CoS Class of 2026 at the convocation ceremony of Rochester Institute of Technology.

Officially graduated last year in 2025 with an MS in Imaging Science, but grateful to walk at this year’s Convocation & Commencement Ceremony.

Forever thankful to my parents and everyone who supported me throughout this journey. ❤️

Stay tuned for the pictures… enjoy the video for now! 🎥✨

Experts like Carl Salvaggio at the RIT College of Science know how to use technology to help farmers plan their harvests! 🌾

The Chester F. Carlson Center for Imaging Science uses imaging technology to provide data on the whole field. By collecting hundreds of images of the field and compiling them into one full image, farmers can then see an ariel view of the state of their field. This perspective allows them to better plan based on the state of their field and incorporate best management practices for sustainable farming. 🤖🌱
