Apparently a distant musician kin of mine from these Tennessee hills got so fed up with the outlaw beer joint below her home on Hearn Hill that she tried for years to get the Watertown City Council to shut the place down.

Exhausting her practical means to shut down the place she disdained, she ended up buying the bar and the 200-or-so acres of farmland around it sometime after the 1970s, sending the owners elsewhere with a pocket full of cash and closing the swinging doors forever.

(i am unc at the function now, telling you an irrelevant fam story continued within the post)

Texas Rivers Protection Association Secretary Alexander Neal urging the Texas Parks & Wildlife Commissioners and executive staff to support the agency and the Office of the Attorney General in being an amicus curiae, or "friend of the court" at the upcoming hearing for an appeal on the Save The Cutoff state case in Tyler.

The case is currently postponed to October 20, 2026, and deals with a group of hunters and fishermen @savethecutoff suing a wealthy landowner in East Texas over illegally blocking access to a section of the Old Trinity River via state land. The eventual outcome of the case could change how the courts interpret stream navigability laws in Texas and beyond.

What’s happening in the Big Bend of the Rio Grande today is psychological warfare –
I can’t tell you how many Texans & others have shared with me how this region, and especially Big Bend Natl. Park, have had profound impacts on their life, on their year, on their relationships with themselves/others, and especially their relationships with the world around us. Some exchanges include how Texas’ Gift to the Nation “saved my life”, “saved my relationship / got me out of a bad relationship”, “got me through immense hardship” - actions that most people would not assume a physical place capable of doing.

I believe the biggest factor of this land’s ability to heal is that, to most peoples’ eyes, this landscape has been largely free of obvious signs of modern mankind’s quest for capital, dominance over “others” and the control of “nature”. This land is void of sirens, big parking lots, busy roads + chaotic activities & imprints of industrial urban or commercial rural areas.

[In 2021 I worked outside daily here and saw less than 10 commercial airplanes flying in the airspace.]

No oil pads here- no superhighways, no lights impeding our view of the galaxy, no power plants, no concrete jungles, no billboards or creepy dystopian gas stations that mock North America’s most iconic ecosystem engineer. No big fences or fragmented landscapes- hence why we still have black bears, mountain lions, and bighorn sheep here.

There are no insensitive/obnoxious symbols here telling you how to feel/think/behave - hardly a thing here designed by some dude you’ve never met to shape how you breathe or live. This type of unharmed landscape puts everyone on a level playing field, literally “grounding” one to the earth and to those around them, human & non-human. In the Big Bend, you get to morph your thoughts & mind onto the images & creatures (canyons, canyon wrens, purple cacti, roadrunners, mountains) around you – they don’t get to tell you sh!t. They just exist in unblemished freedom – alongside you. The act of indulging oneself here and away from modern human symbols is one of the most freeing & healing feelings that I could ever describe or experience.
