Act 1: Kim [bal]

Kim[bal] (Kimbal Bumstead)is an interdisciplinary artist working across painting, drawing, video, performance and sound. His works are abstract representations of spaces and places, created through the process of exploring textures, layers and rhythms of various locations. Through sampling and granular processing of field recordings, found objects, harmonica and his voice, his live performance transforms everyday sonic details into re-imagined landscapes.

We love the ethereal, otherworldly vibe, and named the track Frost Bytes. We haven’t been back in rehearsals @premisesstudios since our last adventure with 6 very creative and inspiring dancers at the end of July. We are very much looking forward to seeing where that potential collab will lead later on this year (watch this space).

Meanwhile, yesterday’s session was so very different; Lee rocked the guitar and dark glasses while exploring all kinds of unexpected textures, while Shaun, Trisha and Alicia Mâ went for a spacious, open weave of sound created by field recordings, acoustic instruments (including samples of such from Alicia’s collection) and live manipulation.

It’s safe to say that we were all really enthused by the new sonic shapes and colours that emerged. Samples to come soon….

Here’s a short clip from last Saturday, when behind closed doors at The Premises Studios London, RM23 spent the afternoon in the company of some fabulously talented dancers- Max Revell /Silk Boogie and friends.(Max, Bea, Connor, Corey, Marcus, and Joshua )

It was a brilliant session of experimenting, exploring new ways of creating sounds and having a lot of fun along the way. Video by RM23’s Trisha McGahan

Ahhhh it’s been a while…. We hope you’re all keeping your cool out there. Commitments, the ‘flu, family, extreme heat and other events meant it’s been a challenge getting all four of us together to jam / rehearse. Yesterday, however, we did it. It was too hot to think straight, but we made some awesome soundscapes just the same.
