When something feels emotionally heavy, how many young people talk about it, and how many choose to keep themselves busy instead?

The second wave of Dil, Dosti, Data looks at how young Indians navigate emotional overwhelm, seek support and experience the challenges of opening up. Drawing on responses from 3,072 young people, the survey found that 38% turn to staying busy rather than talking about what hurts, while only 20% first reach out to someone they trust. Stories from the Youth Ki Awaaz community offer a closer look at what it means to carry things alone, and how difficult it can be to share what we feel.

In collaboration with Rohini Nilekani Philanthropies and Manotsava, Dil, Dosti, Data 2 brings together 23 findings on love, loneliness, friendship and family, exploring how digitally connected young Indians are navigating relationships and emotional support today.

Why has India turned its back on its oceans?

In this piece for The @hindustantimes , @rohini.nilekani asks us to rethink our relationship with the seas that have shaped our history, sustain millions of livelihoods, and hold extraordinary biodiversity.

India’s oceans face multiple, interconnected challenges—from warming seas and declining fish stocks to biodiversity loss and rising sea levels. Addressing them calls for better science, stronger local institutions, traditional knowledge and greater investment in marine conservation.

As Rohini writes, “if we can look towards our shores instead of turning our backs on them, we could create similar success stories and protect our marine treasures.”

What does it mean to be connected in a world where so many of us feel alone?

In her latest piece in @economictimes Times, @rohini.nilekani reflects on the importance of social connection, empathy and cooperation to our mental well-being—and why strengthening our capacity to care for one another matters more than ever.

As we look ahead to @manotsavaindia 2026, on December 5–6 in Bengaluru, these questions are central to the conversations we hope to spark. Manotsava brings science and society together to explore mental health beyond the lens of illness, but through wellness, relationships and the communities that help us thrive.

Knowing what is happening on the ground, and knowing it quickly, can make a significant difference during climate disasters.

Pooja Pawar from @reapbenefit recalls how, during the Chennai floods, Solve Ninjas helped map flood hotspots, relief centres and areas that were still accessible, giving people information they could use to navigate the situation. During COVID-19, data collected on the ground helped enable resource mobilisation across Bengaluru and other parts of India.
These experiences point to a larger role for young people in moments of crisis. When equipped with the skills, agency and tools to observe what is happening around them, they can generate specific, hyperlocal information that larger systems may not have access to in real time. They can connect what communities are experiencing on the ground with the institutions that have the ability to respond.

Local conditions can change quickly, and while the governments and response systems may not always have the resources or visibility to understand what is happening everywhere, young people can surface what is breaking down, by identifying what needs attention and at the same time, hold systems accountable.
The larger idea is simple: when local knowledge can move quickly into the systems that can act on it, communities can respond more effectively to the problems they face.

What could disaster response look like if every community had young people equipped to observe, document and act on what was happening around them?

What does climate problem-solving look like when a young changemaker is working in rural Punjab? And what changes when they are in Assam, or in Bengaluru?

The problems, resources, local contexts and even the ways communities on the ground and young people approach solutions can look very different. In some places, solutions are largely hands-on; in others, technology becomes a natural part of how people engage with a problem.

For @reapbenefit, this difference is important. The goal isn't to prescribe one way of solving a problem, but to help young people understand the context, identify the real problem, and keep the people experiencing it at the centre.
So where does technology come in?

As Pooja Pawar explains, technology can enable what is already happening on the ground—supporting young people with data, resources, mentoring and a platform to take action. Reap Benefit’s own technology is designed with this in mind: not to replace human interaction, but to make the experience more personalised, conversational and reflective.

Whether the solution is an app in Bengaluru or an entirely hands-on intervention in Punjab, the question remains the same: does it solve the real problem, for the people experiencing it?

Follow along for more on-the-ground stories of communities and collaborators building resilience together.

In our Annual Report, @kaktanya writes about a shift in how we think about climate philanthropy: along with funding individual organisations, we are also focussing on strengthening the collective capacity needed for lasting change.

This year, that meant supporting the work of organisations like Council on Energy, Environment and Water (@ceewindia), Indian Institute for Human Settlements (@iihs_in), Prayas, @seeds_india , Mahila HousingTrust and Jan Sahas Foundation, among others, while bringing organisations together through the Heat Huddle and supporting new approaches such as the Jan Saksham Kosh, co-created with SEEDS.

Across these efforts, a common lesson emerged: climate resilience is not only about infrastructure or technology—it is about stronger communities, institutions, relationships and local leadership.

Read Tanya’s reflections on what it takes to nurture collective capacity for a changing climate.
