The RCC PTA is here to assist local PTA units and further the PTA mission: Every child, one voice.💫
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
✊🏽RCC-PTA is a 501(c)(3) advocacy organization (not a fundraising club). We don’t do bake sales. We demand adequate and equitable funding for our schools, and we hold our local government accountable when they don’t do that.
🫱🏻‍🫲🏾We serve all of the Roanoke Valley and encourage PTAs from surrounding counties to join us at our meetings or reach out to get involved or seek support.
🏆We recently won Virginia PTA Child Advocate PTA of the Year.
🗳️We have a big election coming up for 3 City Council positions. The results of that election will greatly impact the future of RCPS. Our job is to share the information that matters and continue to fight the good fight. If you’d like to join us, scan the QR code on the last slide and join your school’s PTA. We would love to see you at our next meeting: 9/23 @ 5:30, located in the Community Empowerment Center. taken in Community Empowerment Center at Booker T. Washington by @roa_pta_ptsa

Our October meeting is October 21st at 5:30 p.m. Please plan to be there, as we will talk about compliance, membership drives, and advocacy.

An email was also sent to all PTA officers listing the RCC-PTA board member assigned to help you with your school’s PTA compliance, along with their email address.

We welcome all area PTAs/PTSAs to our meetings, not just Roanoke City. We hope to see you there! taken in Community Empowerment Center at Booker T. Washington by @roa_pta_ptsa

Where are the checks and balances here? Our City Manager came into a mess. Ultimately City Council is responsible for approving financial decisions and oversight. While the “previous administration” is often blamed, a couple of these council members (and the Mayor) ARE that previous administration.
We want accountability and we want fully supported public education.

There was a challenge. And then there was a choice. Faced with struggling city finances, a choice was made for an office renovation that could’ve been set aside for more pressing city funding needs.
Now we need the city to choose to step up for our schools. taken in Community Empowerment Center at Booker T. Washington by @roa_pta_ptsa

When City Manager Valmarie Turner presented her budget recommendations for FY (fiscal year) 2025-26, “challenges and choices” was the repeated theme.

Now at the start of the 2026-27 school year, our teachers and students have been forced into their own challenges and choices. Layoffs, cut or reduced programs, and loss of our activity buses.

Our city can’t afford to adequately fund our schools but extravagant office remodels are no problem?

We deserve a City Council that takes accountability and holds their employees accountable as well.

We. Deserve. Better. taken in Roanoke, Virginia by @roa_pta_ptsa

This is a huge issue that RCC-PTA would like to see resolved. Our schools NEED activity buses for the entire school year. This is what decreased local funding causes.

There was also a program for students with truancy issues, (which consisted largely of students who spoke English as a second language, ELL) where they could attend after school tutoring or after school detention, and attending twice would erase a tardy. Without activity buses this will be discontinued because it won’t be equitable.
This will land more kids in truancy court, which for ELL kids specifically, will be an issue due to immigration status.
@vivianforroanoke @nickhagen6 @terrymcguireforroanoke @councilman_nash @joecobbformayor what can you do to help resolve this? @roanokeschools need your support. taken in Roanoke, Virginia by @roa_pta_ptsa
