Hidden on the southern edge of San Diego is the '905' or 'The Pits' — one of the city’s last pockets of raw backcountry. Once wide-open Otay Mesa ranchland and a longtime playground for dirt bikers, 4x4, and SxS these trails offer rocky climbs, dusty washes, and sweeping views toward San Diego and Mexico. The 905 is a reminder that adventure is still hiding in San Diego’s backyard.

⚠️ Access changes often and people do get tickets here. Respect closures, stay on legal routes, and please don't leave any trash.

📍Ernie Maxwell Scenic Trail in Idyllwild, CA

Back again in Idyllwild for the day with my Dad. Taking it easy this time and did one of my favorite easy hikes. Ernie Maxwell Scenic Trail takes you up (or down from) Humber Park which is where you can continue on to Tahquitz. It's a steady climb that takes just under a couple hours out and back. Unlike the more intense hikes to Tahquitz or San Jacinto, Ernie Maxwell winds around the mountainside. You'll have tons of shade from pine, cedar, oak, and manzanita, making it one of the coolest summer hikes in Southern California. It still gets hot in the summer so be prepared.

I personally like starting at the bottom and going up, hanging out in the park while soaking in the views of Tahquitz, and heading back down to chill in town. Enjoy!

The ever popular Cedar Creek Falls hike in Ramona, California. This is a fun one, you drop into the river gorge and end up at a surprisingly full swimming hole. You can cool off before heading back up. Sweeping views of the nearby hills and a lush, green valley at the bottom. Hike early like we did and grab brunch in Ramona after!

Roadtrip from San Diego to Arizona with a couple of buddies. Our first stop once we hit AZ was the Apache Trail. We hiked in Lost Dutchman State Park and explored Goldfield Ghost Town right nearby. Then we got on our way and drove the Apache Trail down to Theodore Roosevelt Lake before heading onto Sedona.

The road is super accessible and any car can make it through. There's a dirt portion so if you've got a really low sports car, that's something to think about. Always pack extra food and water when exploring areas like this. There's tons of wildlife. We saw bighorn sheep, cows, wild boars, coyotes, roadrunners, and even peccaries. Enjoy!

An amazing day (or weekend) trip from LA and SD. The town has lots to offer but I came for the hiking. This is a fun trail just under 10 miles out and back. You'll need to fill in a digital permit from the ranger station and you need an Adventure or Interagency Pass to park at Humber Park.

🎒 Hiking Boots, 2-3L of water, snacks. Poles are optional but could help some on the way down. Take more water during hot days. There's 3 springs where you can fill up filter bottles.
