If the world can unite behind football, surely we can unite behind something far more important… Feeding humanity 🌍

Behind every meal you eat is a farmer trying to make impossible economics work…

Fuel, fertiliser, seed and transport - all input costs keep climbing making it increasingly difficult for farmers to produce and for consumers to purchase fresh food. The sector is concurrently fighting against the processed and convenience food category, where the cost per calorie is cheap, but the cost to your health isn’t.

This has made it a challenging winter season so far. But we continue exploring and implementing regenerative farming practices, improving efficiency, embracing innovation and questioning everything we do 🥦🚜🪏📈🫛

Broccoli and Cauliflower… 🥦🥦

2 of our favourite crops to grow in winter. We had a fantastic first harvest, with a cut rate of >95% on both. Small gap in production now, waiting for the next field to be ready. Swipe right ➡️ to see some of this seasons broc and cauli action.

Farm Diaries 📖

Farming is a daily masterclass in resilience, grind and problem solving. Rising costs, tight margins, changing seasons, market pressures and uncertainties.

But there are worse places to fight life’s challenges, than by being energised by sunrise, hugged by sunset and producing nutrition on a beautiful farm 🚜🥬🫜🪏🫛

The adversity is real, but so is the purpose 🔥

The winter skys and sunsets sure make the farm a magical place this time of year. We harvesting the last of our green beans, chillies, peppers and brinjal before the production cycle is over and the cold reclaims the plants back to the soil. We also have one last late cut of mealies and butternut.

Gearing up for winter production with spinach, lettuce, cabbage, red cabbage, curly kale, broc and cauli. Looking forward to crisp-cold mornings, and slower weed growth.

We are now done with the last of summer plantings. We will harvest summer goodies until the plant life cycle is up, or the cold weather claims the plant back to the Earth.

Looking forward to the winter-wonderland at @roadway_farms. It’s actually become our favourite time to work.

We have the following crops coming up for winter:
Cabbage, spinach, kale, broccoli, cauliflower, red cabbage (even though it’s clearly purple 🙄) and lettuce.

We’re also developing a new sub-genre of music on the farm. It’s called ‘pack-house music’ 😬😆😉

In-service training is a compulsory component for students studying a qualification in agriculture (usually 12-18 months). We love teaching, learning and sharing our experience in agri-business, equipping the next generation to be champions for our country’s food security 🇿🇦🌽💪🔥

This week we have beautifully ripe butternut squash, curly kale, spicy green chillies and round brinjal ready for harvest. The quality is excellent 🌱🙏✨🌶️

We start sowing spinach seed this week, and continue to plant green beans, mealies and sugar beans.

We also snapped a shot of one of our local residents, a grey crowned crane. Fun fact: This bird is considered one of the most primitive living crane species, with fossil evidence suggesting that crowned cranes date back to the Eocene period (34–55 million years ago).
