💔 OCTOBER 16. THE BIRTHDAY THAT WAS NEVER MINE.

Every year I share this story. But this year feels different. I’m about to turn 60, and today I’m sad.

For the first 15 years of my life, I believed October 16 was my birthday.

I can still hear her voice saying, “Happy Birthday, Robert Terry.”

But here’s what breaks my heart even more.

I don’t remember a single birthday cake. Not one.

No candles. No birthday parties. No memory of my parents or foster parents making me feel special on the day I was supposedly born.

When I was 15, I was getting ready for my learner’s permit. My birth certificate arrived in a brown envelope.

I remember sitting beside the woman I believed would be my mom forever. I remember her tears when she told me, “Robert, your birthday isn’t October 16. It’s October 18.”

FIFTEEN YEARS. Nobody had even gotten my birthday right.

To some, it’s just two days. But to a child who already felt unwanted, it was another reminder that I didn’t matter.

Today, 43 years later, that pain is still real.

I look at the only photograph I have of myself as a little boy and wonder what it would have felt like to have someone light candles, sing Happy Birthday, and make me feel special.

Years later, my oldest son arrived with the wrong birthday, too. His actual birthday was three days earlier.

HOW ARE WE STILL GETTING THIS WRONG?

How many children in foster care have incorrect names, birthdays, missing photographs, and lost memories?

These aren’t just paperwork mistakes. This is a child’s identity. Their history. Their childhood.

Today I will smile, but my heart hurts for that little boy who never remembers having a birthday cake.

Turning 60 doesn’t erase the pain of being 15.

Please, know their names. Remember their birthdays. Take their pictures. Save their memories.

And for goodness’ sake, get them a birthday cake.

Because every child deserves to know the day they were born MATTERED.

October 16 wasn’t my birthday. But it will forever be part of my story. 💔

55 children. 12 years. A lifetime of love, and goodbyes. 💙

America needs more foster families. We also need to listen to those who have opened their homes: What would help them feel supported enough to stay?

In Episode 3 of The F Word: America’s Foster Care Crisis, Rob Scheer sits down with Judy Wright to explore the joy, grief, and exhaustion of foster parenting.

Judy and her late husband, John, fostered 55 children, many of them medically fragile infants and toddlers. She shares what she wishes they had known, how repeated goodbyes affected their family, and the lasting connections foster, birth, and adoptive families can build when it’s safe.

Her memoir, Just Hold Her, recounts a 674-day placement caring for a medically fragile infant born without a pancreas.

“It’s not love divided, it’s love in abundance.” — Judy Wright 💛

Next: Episode 4 explores the challenges young people face as they leave foster care and navigate adulthood.

Volunteer of the Week: Lesley Robinson! 🎒

Lesley has been involved with Comfort Cases since the very beginning, bringing our mission to children entering foster care in Maine and beyond. She has packed and delivered cases, gathered supplies, and invited her community to help.

In a story Lesley shared, she described delivering more than 60 cases, then heading out to buy supplies for the next ones. A stranger in line heard what she was doing and paid for the entire purchase. It’s a beautiful reminder of how Lesley’s care inspires care in others.

Lesley, we are beyond grateful for the effort, love, and care you’ve given to children experiencing foster care. Thank you for helping us say No More Trash Bags and showing children that they matter. 💙

Sometimes, it’s the smallest gestures that make the biggest impact. 💙

Someone holding the door open. A smile from a stranger. A simple act of kindness when you least expect it.

We get so caught up in the hustle and bustle of life that we forget to appreciate the GOOD happening around us every single day.

Kindness doesn’t have to be grand to be meaningful. Sometimes, those little moments are exactly what we need to remind us that there are still so many good humans in this world. 💛

My challenge to you today: Slow down. Notice the kindness around you. Appreciate it. And most importantly, BE the reason someone else smiles today.

💬 What’s one small act of kindness that made your day recently? I’d love to hear it!

What if a child’s “bad behavior” is a response to what they’ve learned to survive?

On this week’s Comfort Cases: UnPacked, Rob Scheer talks with childhood trauma expert Dr. Frank W. Putnam about the experiences behind behaviors adults may misunderstand—and how a caring, informed response can help a child heal.

They discuss foster care, dissociation, the lasting effects of trauma, and why a safe home is the beginning of healing, not the end.

🎧 Listen at https://comfortcases.org/podcasts/, on Spotify, or on the Comfort Cases YouTube channel.

Learn more about Dr. Putnam and his book Old Before Their Time at https://www.frankputnam.com/.

Saturday morning with Rob Scheer, Founder of Comfort Cases, was a gift beyond words. We celebrated Rob’s 60th birthday with stuffed animals for children entering foster care, shared laughter and tears, and felt so welcomed. 🧡

Rob, thank you for trusting us with your story. Your raw honesty and the kindness you showed each of us will stay with us. So will the signed books we’ll treasure!

We left more motivated than ever to keep showing up in person, supporting Comfort Cases, and helping others understand what children in foster care need.

To everyone who donated to the stuffies drive, joined us on Saturday, or helped behind the scenes: thank you for making Rob’s sweet birthday wish possible. Each stuffed animal will find its way into a child’s hands, bringing comfort when it’s needed most. taken in Comfort Cases by @rob_scheer

My last Monday in my 50s. Wow, let that sink in. 💙

As I get ready to turn 60, I’ve been reflecting on some of the biggest lessons life has taught me. And one thing I know for certain after nearly six decades on this earth…

WORDS MATTER. ❤️

Words can lift someone up, or they can tear someone down. They can inspire, encourage, and heal—or leave scars that last a lifetime.

It costs absolutely nothing to be kind. To listen instead of judge. To choose compassion instead of criticism.

As I enter this next chapter of my life, I hope we can all remember that sometimes the smallest words can make the biggest difference.

Speak with kindness. Listen with your heart. And always remember that your words have power.

💬 What’s one lesson life has taught YOU that you’ll never forget? I’d love to hear it.

Today, we honor Indigenous Peoples’ Day and the histories, cultures, and living traditions of Indigenous peoples.

At Comfort Cases, we believe every child deserves dignity and a sense of belonging. That includes honoring the people, stories, and communities that shape who they are.

We invite our community to listen to Indigenous voices, learn from Indigenous-led organizations, and carry that respect beyond today. 💙💛

One week away from turning 60… and let me tell you, life looks NOTHING like I thought it would. ❤️

But maybe that’s the beauty of it.

As I reflect on six decades of life, I’ve learned that not everyone is meant to stay on your journey. Some friendships are like leaves on a tree. They come into your life for a season, and eventually, they fall away.

But the trunk? The roots? That’s what keeps you standing. 🌳

Stay grounded. Know who you are. Hold on to the people and things that truly matter.

And yes, I’m wearing my Pisa shirt from an unforgettable family trip to Italy! 🇮🇹 A reminder of the memories we make along the way and how quickly time passes.

Sixty years have taught me one thing: Life rarely goes according to plan, but that doesn’t mean it can’t become something beautiful.

Don’t wait for the perfect moment. Make the most of the moments you have.

💬 What’s one lesson life has taught YOU as you’ve gotten older?
