✂️ RAZOR CUTTING TEXTURED HAIR: TECHNIQUE MATTERS ✂️

One of the things I wanted to show in this video is that razor cutting can be a beautiful technique for textured hair when it is used with control, intention, and the right tools.

In this demonstration, I’m using a razor with a guard, which helps control how much blade is exposed as the hair is shaped. That added control is especially useful when working with textured hair because the goal is not to aggressively remove hair—it is to sculpt the shape, reduce unwanted bulk, create movement, and soften the finish while respecting the density and condition of the hair.

The real lesson is in the technique: clean sectioning, controlled tension, the correct cutting angle, light pressure, and a sharp blade all matter. A guarded razor can help make the approach more deliberate, but the stylist still has to understand the client’s texture, elasticity, density, curl pattern, and overall hair health before deciding how much weight to remove.

After the cut, the sleek finish in the video helps reveal the structure of the haircut. You can see how the shape falls, where the weight has been distributed, and how the movement has been created. That is one reason finishing work is so important—it allows you to evaluate the haircut, not just style it.

For beauty professionals, the takeaway is simple: don’t be afraid of tools—learn how to use them properly. Razors, shears, clippers, and irons are only as effective as the knowledge and technique behind them.

Great cutting is not about taking hair off.
It is about knowing where to remove it, how much to remove, and what effect that decision will create.

Education builds confidence. Technique builds consistency. Understanding texture builds better stylists.

The 20 Student Account Challenge, sponsored by The House of Channelle, brought together VyStar Credit Union, First Coast High School, students, educators, and community leadership with one goal: to help young people begin thinking differently about their financial future.
