RF@80 Vol. 21: Pie Jesu.
In Week 21, Robert and David discuss the arrival of a fully formed piece of music in the DGM studio in early 1994.

Pie Jesu was first released as a CD single in 1997, before being included as part of the full Soundscapes album The Gates of Paradise. The album was compiled by David Singleton, mostly from studio recordings, with the exception of two live pieces from Argentina and Sometimes God Hides from a performance in the Queen Elizabeth Hall foyer, and released in April 1998.

In this previously unreleased mix, the original studio recording from the music room at Reddish Cottage in 1994 is combined with the Metropole Orkest playing an arrangement of the piece by Andrew Keeling, the latter performed for a live radio broadcast at Paradiso in Amsterdam under the baton of Jan Stulen on June 28, 2003. The Soundscapes for the performance were transcribed by Bert Lams.

Robert Fripp writing in the sleevenotes to The Gates Of Paradise:

“The act of music is one of many possible actions through which the inexpressible benevolence of the creative impulse may enter our lives, and direct and shape them in a way and manner so radical and overwhelming that one single note might change our world – providing that the one note is the right note, and that we hear it. Better if we wish to hear that we learn to listen.

There is always the possibility, despite the limitations and restrictions we place upon the event, that the action which takes place within the act of music might change our lives.

No professional musician can fail to be unaware of the cynicism, greed and violation upon which the music industry has been based in, at least, recent years. Our own cynicism, in response, is too high a price to pay. Despite all attempts to constrain the power of music, the act of music is always remarkable. Once the rhythm is lost, the song is set adrift from its unfolding in time. Time continues but the music is lost.”

Benevolence is constantly available.

But, we are not constantly available to Benevolence.
To be available to Benevolence, we have to do a little to move towards it. But, rather than do the little we have to do, we do a lot that we don’t have to do.

Rather than do the little that is possible for us, we seek Big Things beyond our reach.

This is the tragedy of the human condition.

RF@80 Vol. 19: A Time To Die (edit)

This week we return to RF’s solo soundscaping, and a piece from the album That Which Passes, the third volume in the 1995 Soundscapes Live CD series, released in 1996.

That Which Passes was compiled from live recordings made in April 1995 during a week-long residency at the Goethe-Institut in Buenos Aires, and from two performances each night at Washington Square Church in New York on September 8 and 9. At all of these shows, support came from the Guitar Craft ensemble Los Gauchos Alemanes, joined by the California Guitar Trio for the New York dates.

The guitarist writing in the sleeve notes to That Which Passes:

“The earlier soundscape CDs have presented the music as live performances, as a series of improvisations and responses to the moment. On this album we have compiled and edited the soundscapes, using them as musical materials fashioned in real time. So, although the music is taken from live performances, it would not have sounded like this in any one performance although it might have done.

I am surprised on listening, while compiling this album with David Singleton, to find that the mourning for my Mother was still ongoing. In that sense, this is a companion album to A Blessing of Tears although rather different in character. A Blessing of Tears is a personal eulogy for my dear Mother, That Which Passes is a series of reflections on mortality and dying.

Strangely, mysteriously, soundscapes have the capacity to be true to the moment in which they appear. I listen to them, and they inform me. I owe particular debts to David Singleton, whose faith in what is possible for soundscapes has lead him into long days and nights to reveal the spaces between the notes; and to John Miller, whose pictures have lead me forward into finding ways of representing in music what he has put into colour. We seem to share the same concerns, and I am exceptionally fortunate to work with both of them. ”
