🎧 **My Vinyl Pick: Prog Edition — King Crimson, “Cirkus” from *Lizard* (1970)** 🎪

Today, we're diving into the experimental world of **King Crimson**, one of the pioneers of progressive rock.

Formed in England in 1968, King Crimson helped shape the progressive rock movement by pushing musical boundaries, blending rock with jazz, classical music, and experimental sounds. Led by guitarist Robert Fripp, the band was never afraid to challenge listeners with unusual rhythms, complex arrangements, and unexpected sonic landscapes.

“Cirkus,” the opening track from *Lizard*, takes us on a surreal musical journey filled with theatrical melodies, intricate arrangements, and **avant-garde jazz** influences.

🎨 **Let's talk about that incredible album cover!** Created by Gini Barris and commissioned by lyricist Peter Sinfield, the original artwork features ornate medieval illuminated lettering. *King* appears on the back cover, while *Crimson* takes centre stage on the front. Every letter contains intricate illustrations inspired by the album's lyrics.

Look closely and you'll discover fascinating cultural references! The Beatles appear in connection with “Happy Family,” while **Ginger Baker of Cream, Jimi Hendrix, and Dave Wade**, Barris' partner at the time, are also depicted. There's even Rupert the Bear piloting a yellow aeroplane! The imagery for the epic title track *Lizard* draws on medieval fantasy, including Prince Rupert and the Battle of Glass Tears.

I love how this cover is like a puzzle, rewarding you the longer you look at it. Just like the music, there's so much to discover!

Drop the needle and let the journey begin! ▶️

Now streaming on @nugsnet, 8 shows from King Crimson’s first-ever Japanese tour in 1981. Listen now ➡️ nugs.net/kingcrimson

This series of gigs marked the beginning of King Crimson’s long-term love affair with Japan. On the back of the newly released ‘Discipline’ album, the tour focused mostly on Tokyo, with shows in Osaka and Nagoya as well.

With 'Discipline,' King Crimson reinvented itself in the 1980s, blending New Wave, minimalism, and intricate interlocking guitar work. The lineup for this era featured Robert Fripp, Adrian Belew, Tony Levin, and Bill Bruford. Tracks like "Elephant Talk" and "Frame By Frame" became signature pieces, characterized by their complex rhythms and tightly woven guitar interplay.

Stream the latest releases and more exclusive Crimson archives only on nugs.
