(Rihanna voice) 🗣️ Work work work work work work!

Building a career on mission-driven work has always been a bit of a rollercoaster. But building one in this climate? Buckle up, buttercup.

Our new Issue Space podcast episode, “Who’s Working in Impact? Snapshot of a Shaken Social Sector” asks impact recruiter and friend of the Space @robertjayross from @cultivate_team — with 2025’s vast team and funding cuts, dramatic restructures, and political hostility….what even are the jobs out there for impact pros??

Spoilers:

💜 You’re not wrong if you feel like social impact job opportunities are in limbo
💜 But you’re also not in your search alone
💜 It’s extremely unclear if philanthropy will help close the gaps in impact work
💜 But there *are* forward-looking skills and roles that social impact employers are seeking
💜 And things org leaders are doing to support their staff through the worst
💜 Even knowing what we’re facing as a workforce, it’s not time to give up just yet.

This honest, supportive, and good-humored live chat serves real insight and hot takes about the social impact work landscape in 2025. If you’ve been looking around and wondering what happens to impact careers from here, this conversation is for you.

Catch the episode on YouTube or just about anywhere you stream your podcasts. (Links in bio for a head start 😉)

Is it better for people in social impact to work together on a few key issues than to work on the causes they personally care about most? We asked a social impact recruiter/career coach and his answer was — not necessarily.

From what he sees in the impact workforce, work that feels forced burns out the worker more quickly than work that’s personally aligned, even when the ‘forced’ work is purpose-led.

Social impact pros have some important decisions to make right now. Vote your perspective — what do you think is the best way to make a difference through social impact work in this moment? by @robertjayross

We ate, we drank, we vibed — and we thought about how to grow for the future! 🌱💪

The deepest thanks to everyone from the Issue Space family who joined and made our first community event a brilliant one. ✨

Special shoutout to our podcast guests and event speakers @robertjayross and @marisakabas for sharing their points of view on impact work in 2025.

Much gratitude to @1fortheworld’s @frankiefreds for an inspiring invitation to help defeat poverty through the 1% Pledge.

And the utmost appreciation for the hospitality of our wonderful venue hosts @primeproduce, a super vibey venue run by wonderful people.

Can’t wait for the next one, and welcome to the Space! 💜

we did it, Joe. while the UK and world mourn the loss of the queen, the editors at The Guardian were all like, “okay, let’s trot out the NYC gays just for a little lighthearted moment.” and trot we did, my friends. trot we did. link in bio, because that’s what famous people say. who wants to date me next?

For the last 95+ years, Oma took this world by storm.
.
She lived through the horrors of WWII in East Germany before escaping to West Germany and marrying an American Jew who brought her to New York with my newborn mom.
.
To state it lightly, she hadn’t known an easy life, and her experiences led her to distrust most human beings. “I saw a lot of moments that made me lose faith in other people,” she used to tell me. “People are capable of terrible things”.
.
Despite her disillusionment, she supported her gay grandson’s political organizing chat over the years, staying actively involved as a voter in efforts to protect his rights and those of others. She understood what was at stake. And she had roughly 1,000 totes from the ASPCA. Animals remained her thing the whole way through.
.
I had an opportunity to live with Oma (and my mom) for seven months of the pandemic. It was tight quarters during an intense time, but she once told me she loved being roommates—which is amazing, because she rarely said she “loved” anything. She mostly told me that after kicking my ass in Bananagrams. That was her favorite time to have me as a roommate.
.
Most people don’t get that sort of time. I’m grateful I did.
.
We’ll miss you, Oma. Thanks for an amazing run. Enjoy the hummingbirds and Olive Garden with Papa up there, and we’ll see you later. by @robertjayross
