How good is skiing in October? - love the spray as full of as much sand from the Australian Red Centre as white snow (don’t worry, washed it all out of my bindings at the bottom) and even though lately I’ve skied a fair amount on snow mixed with sand, twigs, grass, bark and who knows what vegetative matter (not rocks or gravel) my skis are just one base grind away from being as good as new. “Ingen skulle tro dig” (Blizzard Skis tagline on an ad we did) Swedish for “They’ll never believe it” Story of my life really. Not one I ever planned or could have anticipated! I’m very fortunate. Thanks to legendary photographer Ulf Blomberg, filmmaker Gary Bigham, and all the crazies I’ve met along the way. #powdermagazine #blizzardskis #skialpfinland #åkaskidor #skimagazinefrance #laneigemagazine #theskier #verbier taken in Verbier, Switzerland by @robertreichenfeld

I have many bad habits (as a skier! If you know my other habits please don’t go sharing them here!) But one of my worst is a tendency to have tight shoulders and initiate the turn from the shoulder. I’m working on it by focusing on quiet hands, but I think the answer may be in learning to relax my upper body while moving in general. Coaching designed for younger skiers tends to focus more on strength and power, and many drills emphasis those things (as well as balance of course, which is a good thing) but not so much the parts of our bodies that need to be relaxed. I’m just going to add, I’m 69 years old and like most skiers my age, I’ve had a few breaks and tears (well only one break, that was a wing on my pelvis, painful but actually not a big deal if, like me, you’re lucky and get a helivac straight to the ED of a Swiss hospital and aren’t bleeding out). That means I’m no longer as loose as I was when younger, and also usually ski defensively to try to mitigate risk. What do you think? Should older skiers train differently? Or am I wrong about that and just need to stop looking for excuses as to why I can’t drag my hip or launch off cliffs anymore! Thanks to Big Al and Mothy for the video captures - stellar work ! by @robertreichenfeld

New editing experience - might take me a minute optimise…Fun weekend in Manly. How about that sailing club, founded in 1875 ? Love seeing the surf lifesaving rowers. They train where I sail sometimes, and always seem very supportive of each other- and very strong! by @robertreichenfeld

Will sail for ice-cream…Lovely day for a sail, not hot, about 18C and 11-18 knots of wind but blue skies and clear water. I’m always motivated to go windsurfing, but just like skiing in mellow conditions, I sometimes trick myself into staying out longer by promising myself a treat. So today, after I’d been out for a while, decided to sail over to Manly Wharf and buy a chilled coconut water and gelato. My reward was the wind picked up later in the day, so scored some good sailing and as I was packing up at sunset and eating, watched some surf lifesavers go out for an evening row. Chill day. by @robertreichenfeld

Sydney, Australia (no kidding, right?) Random pics. The last frame is maybe a little poignant, the three water bubblers had likely been at Circular Quay for decades when I captured them in 1995 as I was photographing the Eyewitness Guide to Sydney for Dorling Kindersley, when sometime after, the powers that be (probably the corrupt politician who not only held most of the cafe licenses there but was also planning minister at the time) decided to eliminate free water from the quay. by @robertreichenfeld

Surf’s up. Have to admit, I kinda like iPhone photography, especially the ease of creating long exposures. I’ve taken similar photos on film, even had a couple of black and white versions of surfers I printed and put in my portfolio, and without question they would look superior in a frame on the wall, but they’ve only been seen by a handful of people and chances are many more people will see these. Captured with iPhone 17 Pro Max, which is quite good generally, but looking forward to new iPhone 18 Pro Max on order, with faster lens (1.48 v/1.78 , that’s a big jump in the photography world, means better quality in low light) and actual leaf aperture shutter instead of digital approximation. by @robertreichenfeld

Great day for sailing yesterday. Warm and sunny, wind NE 14-22 knots gusting to 25. Quick recap - on Monday i had a stack, (got launched human catapult style) no damage to me, but put a hole in the deck of my board, thought I must have hit it with my knee or something, luckily no water came in (EPS soaks up water like a sponge) because the deck pad sealed the hole. Anyway, a successful repair (just need to source some replacement deck grip), but out sailing yesterday I realised that my initial impression of what caused the damage was impossible, what must have happened is perhaps there was already a soft spot in the deck and I actually punctured it with my heel, trying to resist getting launched. So there you go, even an eyewitness/participant in an event can be mistaken!
Southerly came through last night (38 knots on the edge of the front), pretty cool and drizzly today - haven’t decided yet if I’ll go out, forecast is 20-28 knots. which could be fun, but only about 15/16C Funny story to add, I went deep into to bay where there were many moored boats, and less wind but still gusty, and a guy sunning himself on his fishing cruiser asked me how it was possible that the wind was coming from the same direction that I was heading into. I didn’t have time for a full explanation, but told him that I had a foil/centreboard under my feet that resisted the force of the wind and provided lift. Wonder at how it was possible someone his age, and who obviously spends a lot of time on the water, didn’t have the slightest idea about how sailing works? And then in the dark later, there was a guy and is son who’d just come in, saying they got caught in the storm, I mean in this day and age it’s pretty simple to check the weather before heading out, maybe it’s true what they say about common sense being not all that common! by @robertreichenfeld

Whoops… Had a little stack Monday. First day out, and by chance the Southerly came through - 22 knots gusting to 30. The wind was fine, but my timing and balance were way off and the water was very bouncy (when the swell comes through Sydney Heads, straight into North Harbour, where I was sailing, it refracts off the deep rocky shore and comes back atcha in the channel. She’ll be right, I got catapulted as can happen, striking my deck with my knee and punctured it. I suspect it was already a bit soft there as I did notice something climbing back onto my board (which I did many times!). Sometimes it’s good to be a kook. Good news is the deck grip got pushed into the ding as it happened and pretty much sealed it, felt very dry when I cleaned it up today. Oh, and fortunately no injury to me, not even my ego, conditions were tricky, and I gave it a good go) by @robertreichenfeld
