From shooting ranges & firearms in the Randstad, to fire breathing dragons in Beesel. I’ve started a collaboration with @danielheikens Heikens in 2024 to emerge into the history & community of bonfires in The Hague for the upcoming years.

ROBIN BUTTER – DRAKEBLOOD (DRAGON BLOOD)

Since 2018, Robin Butter has been visiting the small village of Beesel in the southern Netherlands to delve into its unique social fabric, woven around a centuries-old legend. Beesel, as it happens, is dragon territory: the tale of Saint George and the dragon has been deeply embedded in the village’s traditions for generations. To be born in Beesel is to have "dragon blood" running through your veins.

Every seven years, the village transforms into a grand open-air spectacle known locally as Draaksteken (Dragon Stabbing). Robin has documented the elaborate preparations, which are taken to heart by the entire community, involving everyone from the youngest children to the eldest villagers. Her work captures not only the grandeur of the performance but also portraits of the villagers who take on roles in the play—many returning year after year. For some, the journey begins as squires in their youth, eventually culminating in the role of Saint George himself.

The result is a living history of knights, dragons, and princesses spanning all generations. This cherished tradition serves as the glue that holds the community together, embodying their shared past and present. 𝗔𝗡𝗛𝗨𝗜, 𝗜 𝗛𝗔𝗩𝗘 𝗪𝗘𝗖𝗛𝗔𝗧!

China is on the move, there is a online trend called Chinamaxxxing. Where Western youth are embracing Chinese lifestyle habits.
My movement was in the most literal sense of the word, where I found myself being transported from one place to another. Often no idea where I was, no Google Maps to orientate, due to the Great Chinese digital Wall.
These days and interactions felt a bit fleeting and too short at times.

With my phone’s translator as a way to communicate and starting off with a digital flash cards to start a conversation.
Places with organised models, and prepared moments for a delegation of 28 photographers from all over the globe. I wanted to step out of the chaos looking for the local curiosity and tried to invite the local people of Anhui in front of me. I shared my unknown locations within the magic of dancing fishes & dragon parades.

(All portraits are made with permission together shared on WeChat. WeChat is a Chinese version of Whatsapp).

I was invited by the Chinese Cultural Centre @chineescultureelcentrumdh in The Hague, to create this work in Anhui for one week. The event is hosted by the People’s Government of Anhui Province, the Department of Culture and Tourism, the Foreign Affairs Office, and the municipal governments and cultural authorities of Hefei, Xuancheng, Chizhou, Anging and Huangshan.

The past few weeks I’ve been completely obsessed with experimenting with anthotype prints. These are photographic prints made from plant-based pigments. A bit of cross-pollination, and definitely derived from the work Daniel Heikens and I get to make together for the carbon prints (kooldrukken) with Kees Brandenburg.

Like these examples, printed with turmeric in sunlight.

Who would have thought how much detail survives this process? 💭The imperfections, and not knowing what the outcome will be. Do you see how pink it turns? 💓🎀 👑LOVE IT.
It’s pushing me to start looking more closely at UV-sensitive plants in the countries I visit or plan to visit. Though it’s one of the slowest developing practices i ever encountered. 💤 more time to play around👌

Feeling such a childlike wonder where my 1-year-old is my greatest inspiration, because the world should be looked at more often from this perspective.

What a gorgeous warm day it was yesterday ☀️ but saw nothing of it (helaas, pindakaas) we spent another afternoon in @kees.brandenburg darkroom, together with @danielheikens. Working together on our carbon prints for the vreugdevuren project 🔥📷

Loved to watch Kees demonstrate how he turns the coals into pigment like an alchemical process by hand!! ✨

Extra special: Bobbi and Guusje from @sans.studio.amsterdam Studio Amsterdam joined to film for their project on craftsmanships & artists, inspired by a 19th-century Parisian print atelier. Thank you for letting us share our process and thoughts.

Vijf jaar geleden opende Atelier K84 haar deuren. Nu, bij het eerste lustrum, keren 41 kunstenaars terug voor een grote Salon aan de Keizersgracht — en ik ben een van hen.
Van 22 mei t/m 20 juni. Ik ben zelf aanwezig op vrijdag 22 mei & vrijdag 19 juni.

Sinds 17 maart hangen er in de tramtunnel onder het Spui in Den Haag 50 portretten over Scheveningers; heb je ze al gezien? Ja?!! Welke is jouw favoriet 🤩.
(Zelf mag je geen favorieten noemen namelijk want stuk voor stuk bijzonder mooie mensen 💙)

De geportretteerden komen uit verschillende wijken van het stadsdeel. Bij ieder portret hoort een korte quote over hun band met Scheveningen. De foto’s laten zien wat het stadsdeel voor de inwoners betekent. Voor het @haagsgemeentearchief en zijn t/m 7 juni 2026 te zien. taken in Den Haag Centrum by @robinbutter

Tentoonstelling: “Oog in oog met Scheveningen”

Tommy en ik hangen in de Haagse tramtunnel en zijn onderdeel geworden van het @haagsgemeentearchief ! Vanuit het programma #HaagsDNA zijn vanaf heden tot begin juni de portretten van bewoners van Scheveningen te zien.

Een dubbele rol voor Tommy en mij dus: we zijn niet alleen inwoners van Scheveningen, maar zetten ons als duinwachters ook in voor het beschermen van dit deel van @np_hollandse_duinen : een gebied van grote waarde om lekker te wandelen, én waar het drinkwater voor de inwoners van Scheveningen wordt gezuiverd.

We zijn heel trots om hier als duinwachters van @dunea_nl tussen te mogen staan!
