How to grow a living mycelium sculpture in 180 days 🍄🛠️✨

We spent the last six months figuring out how to grow three life sized, living mycelium sculptures for installation at @neverendingglen in Scotland for @kelburnparties 

Seeing them finished and fruiting was more beautiful than we ever could have predicted! 🥰🍄

Come with me as we recap Day 2 of my Dynamic Wearables for Fashion Design workshop with @thepaacademy!

For the second day, we expanded our pattern-development skills while shifting our focus toward garment-scale design and fabrication. We explored how a digitally modeled accessory can move between a three-dimensional, form-fitting state on the body and a two-dimensional flat pattern that connects more closely with traditional garment construction. By creating this relationship between the 3D and 2D states, the final structure can be laid out for fabrication, 3D printed in flexible TPU, and then assembled back into its intended wearable form.

This workflow creates a bridge between computational design, traditional garment patternmaking, and flexible 3D printing, allowing complex digital structures to become realistic, wearable, and fabrication-ready pieces. Huge thanks to @thepaacademy for hosting both the first and second installment of this workshop, and it was wonderful to see so many new and returning faces in this session!

1. We continued developing unique patterns for our ring designs using twisted boxes with the Pufferfish and Mesh+ plugins. This gave us another system for creating controlled repetition, variation, and dimensional texture across a wearable surface.

2. Using the LunchBox plugin, we mapped a hexagonal pattern across a surface through its UV coordinates. By analyzing the surface normals and constructing localized planes, we could also position gemstones at the center of each hexagon. The gems were generated using Peacock, which offers a wide range of cuts to experiment with, along with tools for constructing prongs and gallery rails to properly support each stone.

3. Finally, we explored how to translate a garment from a fitted 3D state into a fabrication-ready 2D pattern. Using Kangaroo, we ran a physics simulation to flatten our hand-designed feminine top, including its incorporated darts, onto a flat plane while preserving the surface area and face relationships as accurately as possible. Over two intensive sessions, participants explored how computational design can evolve from jewelry-scale parametric modules into garment-scale wearable systems using Rhino and Grasshopper. From pattern generation and body mapping to panelization, SubD workflows, and fabrication-aware design, the workshop provided a complete workflow for creating dynamic wearables.

Come with me as we recap a successful Day 1 of my workshop with @thepaacademy !

This second installment of my Dynamic Wearables for Fashion Design course focuses on developing our parametric skills through organic pattern systems that can be applied across a wide range of design projects, with an emphasis on creating processes that support real-world fabrication.

Today, we began by exploring foundational strategies for constructing ornate jewelry pieces, building the tools and techniques we’ll use to develop more purpose-built accessory designs tomorrow.

1. We used a range of Rhino tools to quickly construct different ring forms, exploring hard-surface modeling with mesh faces, SubD sculpting, curve tweening, and signet ring generation and sizing with Peacock components.
2. Using marching squares, attractor points, and Perlin noise graphs, we created organic patterns that feel more distinctive than traditional Voronoi systems and can be quickly adjusted through changes to point placement and noise inputs.
3. Physics simulations with the Kangaroo plugin allowed us to create more intentional gradient patterns. We then used a sphere-packing algorithm to inform a more structured Voronoi intersection system.
4. We continued exploring Perlin noise with the Tundra plugin, this time transforming the mesh itself by advecting each vertex through a three-dimensional vector field.
5. Finally, we used C# scripting to generate a reaction-diffusion pattern across a triangular mesh. By incorporating an attractor curve, we gained additional control over the falloff and influence of the texture across the ring.

One of the hardest things designers face is bringing their beautiful digital designs into the real world. Most complex designs need to be broken down into smaller parts or morphed into flat patterns so that they can be physically cut, printed, or assembled. This struggle exists across industries, but especially in the fashion/accessories design sector. This weekend alongside @thepaacademy I will be teaching a workshop aimed specifically at giving designers the parametric toolset they need to create these complex 3D patterns and how to break them down into parts that you can actually manufacture on your desktop 3D printer.
