I wrote about New Jersey’s newest fire tower, and yes, western forest fire fighters train in NJ cause NJ forest fire fighters have a lot of practice fighting forest fires very close to human settlements, it being NJ. NJ also has amazing forests, especially in the Pines. Thanks to the @newyorkermag and to the @nj.dep . by @robt.sullivan

How the summer went, roughly: (1) a stay in West Kill, just down the road from the site of the first hillotype; (2) Sam & Louise Sullivan singing Bob Dylan tune with Jeff Tweedy & Wilco & friends; (3) first sunrise of 42 or so at Bread Loaf; (3) me not holding the camera still enough to freeze the stars over Water Tower Hill; (4) notes by Thomas Cole on how a Vermont landscape looked when he was in a field so that he could paint said landscape when back in his studio; (5) Beehive Cathedral playing in the Barn at Bread Loaf, and they were just so good and I till can't believe they came; (6) the bear down at Kellam’s place that, like all the other bears in Vermont, I did not see– ditto Vermont’s moose; (7) the fourth of July parade in Bristol; (8) the schematic for the play we wrote; (9) @samandlouisesullivan , as well as Kevin and Eric and Jem opening for Iron & Wine at the Lowell Memorial Auditorium. by @robt.sullivan

Here's @samandlouiseband singing at the ruins of Woody Guthrie's childhood home in Okemah, Oklahoma, circa 2004. See them this weekend at @solidsoundfest on Friday and Sunday, and know that they will be in the audience on Friday night when @wilco and @billybraggofficial will at last perform the songs of Mermaid Avenue together! (Me too!)

Are you kidding? I've been ready for the semiquincentennial for years. To wit, a map I drew for 'My American Revolution,' a book that thinks about how we remember the past. Also, lots of fathers. Not founding, just regular.

I think the first time I saw a Fairfield Porter show was at the Whitney, way back when I was in college, and I remember thinking then that while Porter was using paint brushes he was nonetheless writing. The show at the @aslnyc is wonderful, not just for the way it gives us the arc of his work, from early to late self-portrait, but for how it shows us the paintings that he is yes, painting, but also thinking out with paints and, in one gorgeous instance, watercolor. You might want to bring a psychiatrist AND a couples therapist to really work through that porch in Maine painting, the poet being the elephant in the Adirondack chair. ("Jimmy [Schuyler] came for the weekend and stayed eleven years," Anne Porter said.) But the combination of technical skill and psychological in-your-face-ness beats a fair amount of contemporary auto-fiction by a mile. And then there are the landscapes, which really aren't landscapes at all, but how we feel about the shimmering coast of Maine, the mist melting into islands, the kaleidoscope of spruce and firs and pines. by @robt.sullivan
