The third Weekend Writers’ Retreat with A Public Space is in the books! Thank you to our partners @kaatsbaan for a beautiful long weekend in the Hudson Valley, surrounded by art, fall foliage, and company.

This year, participants nurtured new and ongoing projects with workshop instructors Jo Ann Beard, Mary-Beth Hughes, Han Ong, Tracy O’Neill, Robert Sullivan, Peter Trachtenberg, and Ada Zhang; gained inspiration from craft and literary talks with Sharifa Rhodes-Pitts, Samantha Hunt, Amitava Kumar, and Dave King; and joined a movement class for writers with Sondra Loring. For the first time, writers culminated the weekend with a Literary Open Mic, sharing work old and new, before heading to the Farmhouse backyard for a celebratory dinner by our friends @tables.of.contents.

NARRATIVE DUETS | MARY-BETH HUGHES

Much of how I think about narrative is shaped by my experience as a dancer. Moving through Merce Cunnigham’s studio, I learned to see narrative as a sequence of patterns, not enacted, but embodied.

In this workshop, we’ll explore the idea of narrative patterns, with a focus on narrative duets. We’ll look at passages from Tolstoy’s ANNA KARENINA, among other work, for patterns to mark and move through and break away from.

I have been reading Rainer Maria Rilke’s letters on Cezanne. He visited Cezanne’s posthumous 1901 salon d’automne solo show in Paris daily during its run and wrote his wife the artist Clara Westhoff-Rilke (sculptress and apprentice to Rodin) a letter each day about them. Rilke was particularly possessed by a shade of green in one of Cezanne’s pictures. In a letter to his Clara, he said he visited this portrait each day in the hopes this green would remain imprinted in his mind forever. To immortalize it when he could no longer be in its company. What was memory like before we had photographs? This reading has been a nice foil to @jordanmcdonaldstudio ‘s solo presentation at @rayisaplace non profit gallery program Studio 105. For my first exhibition as curator for Studio 105, Jordan has created a universe of memory, nods to streets in Philly he loves, nods to traditions that came long before him, embodied in his lovingly rendered ceramic vessels. And this magnicificent green glaze he has made, looking at it, and all his glazes referencing the palette and architectural history of his hometown of Philly, brings so much joy. I like to think Rilke would’ve visited it daily too. And perhaps lingered a little longer for the flowers that anoint them by 3rd generation Philadelphia florist @walterpinestudio This is a show for romantics.
