BE GREAT ON GAME DAY!

Too often, I feel like strength coaches want to make their mark on athletes with their in-season training.

Can you train in-season? For sure.

SHOULD you train in-season? Absolutely.

But if you’re maxing players out the day before a game? Or leaving them so sore they never feel loose?

I’m sorry but you’re doing it wrong!

Remember the goal is to be great on game day!

Here’s a practical example of how I set-up in-season workouts for one of my high school basketball players who started practice last week...

Step #1 - Plan the games

The games ARE the show here, so get those in your calendar first.

Step #2 - Plan recovery

The goal after a game is to get the body back to baseline ASAP.
Sure you can just lay around, but I find that planned recovery sessions the day after a game can expedite recovery and get you feeling better, faster.

Step #3 - Plan stim workouts

Stim workouts provide two benefits (IMO):

1 - They make sure the body feels GREAT going into game day, and

2 - They prime the nervous system and wake it up so you’re feeling fresh, bouncy and explosive!

Step #4 - Plan the actual workouts

I know it’s crazy, but the workouts are THE LAST thing I put into the calendar, and I divide them into “maintenance” workouts and “loading” workouts.

The biggest difference here are the exercises I choose, along with the volume/intensity of the overall workout itself.

And here’s a gentle reminder - even in the most crazy seasons, there are typically pockets of time where you can get real S&C work in...

...but you have to plan ahead and have a vision for where it fits!

Hopefully this was helpful, and if you want to learn how I do this in a step-by-step fashion, consider picking up my “In-Season Program Design” masterclass from my website

Had @robtrainsystems come on the Super Coach Mentorship for a program design and coaching troubleshooting call answering questions about how to improve the results, experience for clients, as well as “solve hard problems” (which brings up your value as a coach).

We had 75 mins of 🔥 but wanted to share a great insight Mike shared that he uses for his online and in person coaching clients to adjust for exercise selection.

Steal this and improve your programming.

Today I sit down with my good friend Stephen Calarco to talk about what really helps gen pop clients make progress.

We unpack a few key items in this episode: 1. Why more gym time isn’t always the answer, 2. How to get clear on what a goal actually requires, and 3. Why nutrition habits, sleep, and life outside the gym matter just as much as the workout.

We also dive into the human side of coaching: How your words can build confidence or reinforce negative self-talk, when a coach should listen versus refer out, and how to cut through the noise of social media.

If you listen to this entire episode you’ll come away with practical strategies to coach with more empathy, hold clients accountable, and help them build fitness that supports a better life. by @robtrainsystems

I’ve got my good friend Joel Jamieson back for his final stop on the podcast!

In this episode, we explore the science and practice of training for a longer, healthier life. As the title implies we spend a great deal of time covering cardiovascular disease, but we also discuss the differences between high- and low-intensity cardio, how to optimize your training schedule, and the differences between training men and women.

Joel brings decades of coaching experience and a research-driven perspective, and after listening to this episode I’m confident you’ll have a better understanding of what actually moves the needle for performance, health, and longevity! by @robtrainsystems

Seeing WAAAYYYY to much of this with my young hoopers lately.

In the gym working on 20 dribble combos they'll never use in a game.

Stupid heavy lifting on a frame that just needs the basics.

Or mindless conditioning that is supposed to "toughen them up" - but doesn't help them in their actual sport.

Look, I'm all for working hard.

On the court or in the gym, as my guy @coachjoeyburton likes to say, "Hard work is undefeated."

Just make sure you're working hard ON THE RIGHT THINGS.

And that's where having vision comes in.

Have a vision for what your game should look like.

Have a vision for how you want your body to move and feel.

And then find coaches to help you make that vision a reality! by @robtrainsystems
