It’s a very special day.

City, Coast & Country is officially available in the UK.

Seeing this book find its way to readers on the other side of the world is something I never imagined when this project first began. Celebrating its launch in London a few weeks ago was a moment I’ll always treasure, and this beautiful film captures just a little of that evening.

To everyone who has supported this journey - whether you’ve welcomed the book into your home, attended an event, shared kind words or simply followed along - thank you. It means more than I can say.

Milan-based fashion designer Marta Ferri wearing a dress of her own design, in the thirteenth-century Palazzo Borromeo courtyard. Located near Marta’s (by appointment only) studio, the private 'cortile' features ancient frescoes depicting her husband’s family crest. It also serves as the perfect backdrop to photograph Marta’s timeless gowns. I took this photograph and the interiors of her studio and home for my book A Room of Her Own: Inside the Homes & Lives of Creative Women.

One of the things I love most about being a photographer is that my projects involve travelling to some of the most beautiful places in the world. Among the most magnificent is @passalacqualakecomo , which is the preferred home-away-from-home of creative polymath @jjmartinmilan . She's one of the most inspiring design leaders in the world today, and the connections she forges with other female visionaries, including Valentina di Santiis, whose family owns Passalacqua, are wonderful. I took these shots for my book This Creative Life, including some photos here that didn't make the final cut. Thank you JJ, for hosting the most wonderful book launches in Milan that I could hope for and for having me stay in your colour-filled home. Join me in East Melbourne this Thursday, 14th November at 6-8pm for an intimate soiree and book signing to launch This Creative Life: Fashion Designers at Home. Bookings essential and can be made through www.johnsoncollection.org I can’t wait to share some of the stories gleaned inside the 20 private homes featured in the book, from Laudomia Pucci in Florence and Bella Freud in London to Martin Grant in Paris. I took this image inside Laudomia’s home, Palazzo Pucci. The interior features Pucci/Cappellini Rive Droite chairs designed by Patrick Norguet in 2001, an Emilio Pucci circa 1968 Vivara wool rug, and a fresco painted in 1820 by George Augustus Wallis, depicting “The Stories of Ulysses,” inspired by Homer’s Odyssey. When I first came up
with the idea for i/Edit,
Melbourne-based and internationally loved photographer and author @robynleaphotography was one of the first creatives I envisioned featuring.

Looking at Robyn’s vibrant photographs and reading her vividly written books is like entering a portal to the worlds of the most interesting people and places across the globe. While her lens exposes the emotional ridges and textures of the spaces she captures, her writing peels back the layers of the stories behind them.

Robyn’s work casts a lush spell that spans the fields of art, travel, lifestyle, fashion, and food. Her books are perched high on my living room coffee table and displayed proudly. They’re my own private mode of transportation and I love to take a trip inside them.

In her i/Edit feature, she shares her creative process, her favorite gems including designers, artists and a hotel that brought her to joyful tears.

Poppies dancing by the window in artist Claire Basler's studio in rural France. I took this photo for my book 'A Room of Her Own', which features 20 creative women in their homes and studios around the world. ⁠

A simple flower has heightened meaning for Claire and she believes the words 'décor' and 'decorative' have been abused, leading to the demise in the appreciation of flowers as a subject in art. 'A flower is not simply an element of décor, it is alive!’, she explains. 'Décor can be a fundamental expression of beauty, and beauty is intelligent, the motor of wisdom and understanding.’⁠

Claire’s use of flowers in paintings and interior installations invites the viewer to experience colour, form and space in new ways, offering respite and hope in the face of seemingly insurmountable global problems. 'In the face of the world's violence, I express my pain and incomprehension with my hands’, she explains. 'I turn to the complex beauty of flowers, and I communicate with them in silence: crying, laughing or simply smiling in their wonderful company.’ She explains that this unspoken dialogue with nature is her lifeline: 'If I couldn't be surrounded by nature, I would invent it through my artwork, or I would die’.⁠

I photographed and interviewed visionary creative powerhouse Lucinda Chambers, who was the Executive Fashion Director at British Vogue for 25 years, in her London home for my book This Creative Life: Fashion Designers at Home. Lucinda's artistic spirit finds endless expression in everything she does and each space she inhabits. While she is as comfortable in the role of creative director as she is in fashion and interior design, none of these labels defines her. She continues to forge ahead, playing, exploring, experimenting and manifesting myriad global projects. With a great passion for ceramics, from the homemade to high-end, she uses them as much for dinner parties as she does for decor. If you’d like to own a little memento of Lucinda’s work, she and @serena_hood (co-founders of curated coolness @collagerie ) have just done a collaboration (with @zarahome ) which includes some of the most beautiful ceramics (see the last slide). We’ve long been admirers of Klarissa Pfisterer and Hamish Freeman’s ability to combine modernity with a classic sensibility in their publishing work, and were delighted when they agreed to design A HEIDE HARVEST.

@pfisterer__freeman had the unenviable challenge of synthesising different voices, narrative text, recipes, photography, art and garden notes into a cohesive visual whole. Their insightful observations led to juxtapositions we hadn’t expected, and a sense of calm order unites the pages.
