Milan-based fashion designer Marta Ferri wearing a dress of her own design, in the thirteenth-century Palazzo Borromeo courtyard. Located near Marta’s (by appointment only) studio, the private 'cortile' features ancient frescoes depicting her husband’s family crest. It also serves as the perfect backdrop to photograph Marta’s timeless gowns. I took this photograph and the interiors of her studio and home for my book A Room of Her Own: Inside the Homes & Lives of Creative Women.

I photographed and interviewed visionary creative powerhouse Lucinda Chambers, who was the Executive Fashion Director at British Vogue for 25 years, in her London home for my book This Creative Life: Fashion Designers at Home. Lucinda's artistic spirit finds endless expression in everything she does and each space she inhabits. While she is as comfortable in the role of creative director as she is in fashion and interior design, none of these labels defines her. She continues to forge ahead, playing, exploring, experimenting and manifesting myriad global projects. With a great passion for ceramics, from the homemade to high-end, she uses them as much for dinner parties as she does for decor. If you’d like to own a little memento of Lucinda’s work, she and @serena_hood (co-founders of curated coolness @collagerie ) have just done a collaboration (with @zarahome ) which includes some of the most beautiful ceramics (see the last slide). There is also table linen, decorative objects, rugs and cushions. **By the way, this is not an ad and I am not being paid to promote Lucinda’s work. Just love it and want to help spread more creative joy in the world! 🥰 #interiors #ceramics #décor #designinterior #collections #collagerie

I am beyond excited to announce the release of my new book *THIS CREATIVE LIFE: Fashion Designers at Home*. It recently appeared in UK, US and European boutiques and bookstores and, as of this week, in Australia! What began as a lockdown project featuring Australian subjects eventually expanded to include designers from six countries. The homes represent 13 architectural styles spanning over 500 years, with decor ranging from eclectic and exuberant to restrained and refined. A shared theme among all twenty designers is their drive to create—a passion that underpins the text in almost every chapter. The first paragraph of the intro sets the scene: “For many of the visionaries whose homes are featured in this book, being creative is not a choice but a deep-seated need - an all-consuming desire that has no bounds. It doesn’t stop when they leave the studio but follows them home and stays with them always, like a loyal and constant companion. Incessant and excitable, it can fuel their dreams, wake them at night and greet them at first light with ideas and images fully formed, guiding their day ahead.”

Among those in the book are revered design master @martingrantofficial , British Vogue Fashion Director turned designer @lucindachambers and polymaths @bella_freud @lukeedwardhall @chykak and @ladoublej founder @jjmartinmilan . Italian interiors include the homes of Argentinian-born Rome-based @soledad.twombly , visionary Florentine @laudomia.pucci and the apartment of @rovi_lucca founders @bradleyseymour and @fabrizio_taliani. The book also explores the endlessly creative worlds of @sophieconran @cococonran @alicetemperley @jadehollandcooper @tamasinedale @sophiekeeganjewellery @jadehollandcooper @selina_blow @garygraham422 @gillesmasse @andreatarti and @aquazurra Creative Director @edgardoaquazzura , who lives on the banks of the River Arno in Palazzo Corsini.

Heartfelt thanks to all the designers, to Simone Elder at @studioortolan , to @thamesandhudsonau and Kirsten Abbott for commissioning the project and to the global Thames and Hudson offices.

I took this photo, which was published in my recent book 'A Room of Her Own', in a private garden in Capri, that belonged to Anna Maria Coronato. When designing and restoring the garden, she was inspired by literary gardens of the 17th and 18th centuries, where plants and flowers were used as symbols and metaphors.

On the uppermost tier of the property’s sloping block, Anna installed a garden of cacti and succulents along with a small orchard of apricot, cherry and lemon trees. Nearby, in handy proximity to the kitchen, a herb garden was established to ensure a steady supply of garnishes for her favourite Neapolitan dishes. The remaining areas were planted with olive and pomegranate trees along with a rainbow assortment of flowering plants, including African and calla lilies, climbing bougainvillea and jasmine, begonia and oleander, hydrangea, peony and hibiscus.

There is a long tradition of curated private gardens on the island. In the early twentieth century French poet and Capri émigré Jacques d’Adelswärd-Fersen fuelled interest in garden design and local flora by wrapping his clifftop home, Villa Lysis, in a sumptuous skirt of cypress, myrtle and laurel trees. He also installed an orchid house along with pavilions, terraces and loggias around the property to frame the views of the Marina Grande.

In 1939, similarly inspired, Capri-born botanist, linguist, engineer and one-time mayor of the island Edwin Cerio released a book, 'Flora privata di Capri', that documented the island’s indigenous flora. His friend, the controversial writer Norman Douglas, was also a keen botanist, establishing on the grounds of his Anacapri home, Villa Daphne, a vast garden of oak and olive trees, cypress and Mediterranean pines.

A dreamscape by French artist Claire Basler, that I photographed for my book A Room of Her Own. Floral installations in the interiors of her home sit in lyrical conversation with the murals she paints on the walls. Moving, masterful and mesmerising!

Thank you Claire and Pierre for three days of creative (and culinary) heaven! 💛💛💛 And merci beaucoup to your fluffy cat Cassandra for keeping my daughter Issy occupied for hours while I photographed your home and studio. 💛 🐈

Fashion designer Marta Ferri wearing a dress of her own design inside Palazzo Borromeo's internal courtyard in Milan's historic centre. The palace was built for her husband's ancestors in the 13th century and despite being damaged during WWII, many of the architecture features and original frescoes, like those seen here, were saved.

With a late Gothic window frame on her left, the Borromeo's family motto above, and swathed in cloth woven with an ancient motif, Marta appears very much a modern woman at ease with history and tradition.

I took this photograph for my book, 'A Room of Her Own: Inside the Homes & Lives of Creative Women'. Another version of the scene was chosen for the chapter about Marta and her work, though this pic is still a fave. 💛💛💛

Artist Annabelle Adie describes her 1820s Montmartre apartment as her ‘antidepressant’ - an extension of her work and essential to her emotional wellbeing. ‘I have a conscious awareness that I am fighting depression every single minute of my life…I have found my creative work is one of the best ways to harness it,’ she explains.

Her unique visual lexicon is expressed in fabric, light, colour and clay which she uses in multiple projects – commercial and artistic, personal and public.

Annabelle admits to being abnormally colour sensitive and the palette she chooses for her home's interiors is mirrored in her clothes, artwork and even her lipstick. She'll often use a very strong, or even fluorescent hue, like exclamations, against an otherwise neutral background. When it comes to her ceramics, she works almost entirely in white out of “a need for purity and simplicity, in contrast with all the other effervescence of colour and texture".

I interviewed and photographed Annabelle and her home in Paris for my book 'Bohemian Living: Creative Homes Around the World'. I realised when talking with her that while we came from very different worlds (she was born to a Scottish father and French-English mother and bounced between France and exclusive British boarding schools growing up, and I was a kid from Ballarat), we had other things in common.

We both found that meaningful creative projects can drive depression into retreat and that our living environments help provide an important avenue to meet emotional needs. I'm sure these feelings ring true for many of the subjects in this book along with a number of subjects in my latest book 'A Room of Her Own', and perhaps even for you?

I took this photograph at the Ritz Paris inside one of the hotel’s historic 18th-century Royal Suites for the coffee-table book ‘Eternally Ritz’ published by Assouline.

During the week-long shoot I was given "access-all-areas" - from the bustling bread and patisserie kitchens downstairs, to the Maria Callas suite on the top floor, and the hotel's extensive historic archives.

One of my favourite interiors to shoot was Chopin suite - complete with a grand piano, curved walls and a ceiling painted with dancing cherubs, bluebirds and floral garlands. I lay on the bed to get a shot of the ceiling and could have stayed all day!

Frédéric Chopin arrived in Paris in 1831 and lived for a period on the Place Vendôme until he died prematurely at age 39. In her autobiography, Chopin's partner George Sand wrote: "His genius was filled with the mysterious sounds of nature, but transformed into sublime equivalents in musical thought, and not through slavish imitation of the actual external sounds. His composition...was surely filled with raindrops, resounding clearly on the tiles of the Charterhouse, but it had been transformed in his imagination and in his song into tears falling upon his heart from the sky. The gift of Chopin is the deepest and fullest feelings and emotions that have ever existed. He made a single instrument speak a language of infinity...poems of a boundless exaltation, dramas of unequalled power.”

Portrait of a wardrobe in Julie Huh's home in Pays de la Loire, western France. I photographed the interiors of the circa 1857 petit château for French House Chic, a book exploring French interiors by Jane Webster (Thames and Hudson, 2017).

The shoot was a dream. Julie's impeccable collections of linen, fine china, antique furniture and objects filled every room, every drawer and every cupboard. Even the attic was overflowing with atmosphere and photo ready.

Can't wait to pack my bags and be back on the road doing these projects again! 🥰🥰🥰
