From a questionnaire to Times Square!

Absolutely delighted to see Rock Badger’s artwork visualising human emotions on display in Times Square, New York City.

During Frieze week, New Yorkers are getting a glimpse into a new way of engaging with mental health.

Volunteers responded to a series of questions designed by Mariana, a specialist in behavioural neuroscience and psychology. Each response was then transformed into a unique piece of artwork by the brilliant Santiago Mondjian. The artworks reflect the different seasons of the year as a powerful pictorial representation of the emotional states.

The result is a tool that translates personal mental health data into beautiful immersive and immersive art; for a more positive and meaningful connection with our own data. by @rock.badger

Connection: 2036
25 voices. One future.
This installation is part of The Connection Code, a Sparks x WIRED series investigating human connection.
At Sparks Connection Code brunch during MWC Barcelona, senior technology leaders were invited to pause. In the garden of the Monastery of Sant Miquel, they wrote their answers to two questions on cards and hung them on a tree:
Imagine 2036: what is the boldest shift in how humans will connect?
Looking at the next decade of connection: what excites you, and what keeps you up at night? 25 of those cards were chosen.
Each answer was analysed for emotional sentiment, and a colour palette created to reflect the feeling carried in the words. Al then gave each prediction its voice: not a neutral reading, but a tone shaped by the nature of the reflection itself. The artwork is audio-reactive: the particles you see are moving in response to the prediction being read aloud.
Those 25 individual pieces then coalesce into a single collective work with all the reflections becoming a conversation between the respondents, their visions manifesting over time in a kaleidoscope of colours, shapes and connections, playing across Now Trending at The Outernet. Tonight, the screens are the only light source in the room.
Created by ØLali, a Parisian art duo creating audio-reactive and generative artwork in partnership with Rock Badger, who engage with data in emotional, compelling and beautiful ways. Screen production by YUK. Commissioned and Creative Direction by Sparks. taken in Outernet-London by @rock.badger

What if Monet coded ?

Florian Zumbrunn is an artist who is painting with code. Echoing Monet, Renoir and Sisley, Florian captures the delicate nuances and impressions of nature: its colours, its light, and how they shift throughout the day and across the seasons.

Florian's work is about memory and nostalgia, moving between the digital and the physical. Each piece starts on screen, with code as his paintbrush. Then it leaves his computer:

“Then I export the image and print it, usually on watercolour paper. It has a strong texture that adds to the textures I added in my code. I go to my atelier, where I work with traditional tools: crayons, pastels, and oil pastels..."

It was great to speak at this years UK Creative Festival discussing our work with Sparks, WIRED and Young Creators UK (YCUK) for the Connection Code.

It was fascinating discussing the import role of human connection and collaboration.

So much of the best innovation and artwork comes from genuine collaboration and this project epitomised this. Teams like this will be at the forefront of creating beautiful, immersive and data-driven artwork at fabulous events.

It was powerful seeing Rock Badger's and ØLali's artwork frame our discussion. by @rock.badger

We spoke to artist Andreas Lutz on his extraordinary work exploring where human intention ends and machine agency begins.

"Rather than treating technology simply as a tool, I am interested in giving the technological system an active role within my work. The machine becomes an autonomous participant that can transform and communicate."

For Andreas, AI is an instrument for interrogation, a way of testing where its possibilities end and its limits begin. That tension is exactly where he uncovers perspectives he couldn't have reached before.

Artists are not bystanders to technology's future, rather they are shaping it by giving it meaningful, innovative and compelling applications.

Artists have always taken the latest tools around them, and infused them with meaning. Now the latest technologies are becoming their pigment, palette and paintbrush and they are working with it intentionally, beautifully and ethically.

The results are powerful immersive artworks that make audiences feel.

We spoke to Nate Mohler about why it is so important for artists to work with technology.

In the studio with Ke Jyun Wu:

For Ke Jyun Wu his art is all about making audiences feel that "wow" moment.

“Each piece starts with a "what if?" What if you could control falling leaves with your hands? What if you could talk to a plant?

Then I build that question into a space people can walk into, mostly interactive installations and full dome films.

What I'm always after is a wow moment that makes people feel something again.”

The opportunity to speak to @coldplay drummer Will Champion about Coldplay ’s spectacular impact across music, sustainability and creativity was so exciting. It was an honour to moderate alongside Diane Nishigaya MacGillivray at @northeastern.ldn

Coldplay are leading the way in sustainable touring with fans literally powering their shows with their energy. The optimism and collective impact when it comes to using creativity to drive change is ground breaking and sets the benchmark for the music industry.

Coldplay are also using new technologies to transform how the audience connect with their music. From increasing accessibility so fans can feel sound with haptic vests, to using AI to create personalised and unique visuals based on fan’s feelings when listening to their music.

Using creativity to communicate sustainable impact and AI to increase our connection with sound are exactly what I am fascinated by with Rock Badger and I feel so inspired for our future projects. by @rock.badger

When artists successfully translate information into beautiful artwork, it creates a powerful, unique and emotional connection with it.

Dan Hoopert's [@danhprt ] mesmeric work creates exactly this reaction. Through his practice, Dan aims to create a feeling of phenomena through abstract image and sound, blurring the lines between physical and digital.

We spoke to Dan about his innovative artwork:

"A lot of what I do revolves around communicating in an abstract way. I want it to form a feeling or the start of an idea.
I like the connection aspect of being able to place a thought or feeling in someone’s head through a reaction to the work without the need for any other form of communication."

Data doesn't have to remain in spreadsheets, reports and dashboards. By transforming it into art, we can create a powerful and emotional connection with it, helping people engage with information in innovative ways.

Here is a fascinating and beautiful selection of artworks and extracts from conversations we've recently had at Rock Badger with leading global artists, exploring why they are using data as an artistic medium.

1. Weidi Zhang, 'Wayfarer':
"Data serves as a vessel of memory, narrative, culture, and time — a medium for both cultural production and reproduction."

2. Alex Le Guillou, 'The Giants':
"Data preserves the memory of a specific moment and location. The connection I want to create is between the viewer and a place they may never visit, brought to life through its data."

3. Fustic, 'Re.imagine Vol.01':
"For us, data is not numbers but living traces of gestures, collective memory, and the rhythms of an environment."

4. Dan Hoopert, 'A Conversation Between Trees':
"These (data capturing) technologies, let me draw a real connection between the work and the outside world. I think that's important."
