Here’s the first birthday gift of my thirties (!!) 📕
And ..the last thought from a very intense, chaotic, beautiful decade: my twenties 💚

The gift came with a note:

“Thank you for doing the impossible every day.”

That moved me.
For the words, and for who wrote them.

The gift arrived on Monday, while I was at @polimi — the place that gave me the most opportunities to grow over the last ten years.
The place I left many times and always came back to.
A place of incredible people and mentors, and yes… also a few legendary scoldings, right until the very last week of my twenties 🥲

Who gave me the gift?
Someone who unknowingly shaped a huge part of my journey: @poetofcode

The gift? Her bestseller book, #unmaskingAI

To explain why this means so much to me, we need to go back to 2019, when I first started questioning AI and facial recognition.

Then came lockdown, endless readings, theoretical research, experiments, and eventually @codedbias — the documentary starring @poetofcode that deeply inspired the research that later became @capable.design

Her story stayed in my head for years: while at the @mitmedialab, she discovered that a facial recognition system could not recognize her face as human unless she wore a white mask.
Later, she founded the @ajlunited to fight algorithmic bias and injustice.

A myth.

In 2023, I started my journey at the MIT Media Lab.
That year, I met Joy at the @mitmuseum during the presentation of her book.

I was wearing a Cap_able sweater, trying to look confident while internally rehearsing “Hi, I’m Rachele” about 24 times before speaking to someone I considered a hero.

Two years later, we are filming together for the documentary @excoded.film . ❤️
@poetofcode comes to Milan to film with me alongside extraordinary people, gives me her book, and at one point tells me:

“The microphone is yours now. Speak about what you believe in. Somewhere in the world, someone will watch this and feel inspired by you — as I inspired you once.”

And maybe that’s the last thought of my twenties — the decade in which I discovered AI, design, research, and the world of machines we live in:

I moved to Israel at the end of February, this was my first trip outside Tel Aviv, in the desert. uha.
