This Rosa Multiflora started it all… my passion, my obsession, and my love for roses…

About 18 years ago, when I first discovered this wild rose, she was in an open field, growing near our natural pond. There were loads of wild roses rambling about in the back woods, but not this close to the gardens. I quickly cleared the weeds around her, to allow for a bit more light, and then let her be.

After a few years, she started to peek over the native grasses, as if to say, “Hello, I’m still here”. I always smiled when I saw her from afar, for she pulled at my curiosities. I knew from the wild roses in the woods that she would soon explode with growth, potentially taking over if not kept in close check. I also knew that if she was going to be a part of the gardens, she would need to have boundaries. But, at the same time, she deserved to roam free and grow as she was meant to grow. Don’t we all?

Years passed, and we were in the process of adding deer fencing around the entire perimeter of our garden space. There was only one issue… This beauty was right in the path of the new fencing. Like any strong woman, she had weathered many storms, emerging stronger and more beautiful with each passing year. This wild girl deserved to stay!

Today, she has grown into a massive garden goddess . Although, I do keep her tidy, I continue to allow her to display a bit of her wild side. Standing well over 10 feet tall, she watches over the Japanese garden, Dark garden, Willow Hut, and the new Rugosa Hill.

This rose has been a refuge for me over the years… a place to go and just be. Each spring, I make a point to visit her daily, knowing her tiny heart shape petals will fade quickly. She is the reason I fell in love with once blooming roses. They slow me down, forcing me to pause and appreciate their fleeting beauty. They also fill me with joy and anticipation, as I dream of next year’s blooms.

I have nurtured her for so many years… But, what I never expected was that she would also nurture me. It’s funny how our closest friends live in the garden…💚

Another beekeeping season is in the books! ☺️

My days of running 30 colonies are over, but I am so thankful to be able to care for my 3 colonies. Also, I was able to remove approximately 50lbs of honey from my crazy Italians, which was a bonus! Now, I just need to get that extractor spinning…🤪🐝🍯

Today was my last hive inspection of the season!🥹

My Italians look fabulous!! Their little brood chamber is so adorable! And, they are more than ready for the winter with honey/pollen stores.

My lazy buckfast bees, on the other hand, are questionable. 😬

I have never had buckfast bees before. This year, I thought I would try them since they are supposed to be winter hardy. I have two colonies and they are super calm and would be great for kids, but they don’t even compare to the Italians. Granted, if they make it through the winter, maybe next season will be their year to shine?!?!
Time will tell…🐝
