Thank you @cultured_mag and Karly Quadros (@_karlyq_) for featuring David Reed and our exhibition “Terrible Idea”

“The studies aren’t mere prep work. Instead, they’re a map to the constellations of relationships between the artist, his paintings, his collaborators, and his vast array of influences.”

We are pleased to announce our participation in the fifth edition of Independent 20th Century, September 24-27 at The Breuer Building,

Our solo presentation of photographs by renowned artist Joel Sternfeld will offer viewers insight into Sternfeld’s initial exploration of color photography through a selection of small-format, dye transfer prints. Many of these images were taken during rush hour, in New York City, in some instances around the corner from the Breuer.

Rodder is delighted to announce the representation of renowned New York-based artist David Reed (b. 1946, San Diego, California). His debut exhibition with the gallery, Terrible Idea, is currently on view through October 24, marking his first exhibition in New York in six years. This exhibition features recent working drawings and color studies alongside the artist’s paintings, offering viewers insight into the intellectual and technical rigor that remains at the core of his artistic practice.

With a career spanning more than five decades, David Reed has become one of the most influential abstract painters of his generation. Throughout his career, Reed has maintained a dialogue between the past and the present. Paintings with vivid colors and hues are rooted in a system of coloration informed by the artist’s study of Old Master painters, while simultaneously engaging with and redefining the possibilities of abstract painting. Not limiting himself to one discipline, Reed’s practice moves across film, literature, and art history, bringing these fields into the present through the act of painting.

Rodder is pleased to announce our participation in the 2026 edition of Independent 20th Century, taking place September 24–27 at The Breuer Building in New York.

For this year’s fair, the gallery will present a selection of Joel Sternfeld’s (@sternfeldarchive) dye transfer photographs from the 1970s, offering insight into the artist’s initial exploration of color photography. While these photographs were the basis of Sternfeld’s first successful Guggenheim Award application, they largely went untouched in the artist’s studio for years. This presentation will mark the first time these works have been properly exhibited in New York City.
