POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

I got to meet a painting hero of mine today: the great David Reed. I went to @roddergallery to see his show before it closes tomorrow and he was there. I’ve loved his work since I was a 19 year old painting major at Pratt and I told him this. My face in this pic is literally this emoji 🥹
Look at these paintings. They are just perfect to me.

Wrote about David Reed’s Terrible Idea at Rodder @roddergallery for @brooklynrail online now (link in bio!) -

“At Rodder on the Upper East Side, a master of Post-Minimal abstraction lays bare the joys and tribulations of creation. Combining diaristic notes from hours spent in the studio with correspondence, clippings, and advice from friends, David Reed’s Terrible Idea is an exhibition that celebrates process as, alongside, and over product. Reed’s painting has been widely celebrated for years, but the works on view tell uniquely human stories about the real work of picture-making, both in moments of intense self-reflection and communal problem solving.”

My latest contribution to Whitehot Magazine on David Reed's exhibition at Rodder. Ive been a long time fan of his work. Its an honor to write about his work.
https://whitehotmagazine.com/articles/conviction-david-reed-s-doubt/8059

"The working drawings make this temporal structure visible. They reveal that the finished paintings are not the inevitable outcome of an initial idea but the residue of competing possibilities. The painting is what endures. Terrible Idea is therefore less an exhibition about process than about the impossibility of separating process from perception. Reed’s notes, dates, corrections, and doubts do not explain the paintings; they complicate them. They reveal that beneath the apparent control of the finished surfaces lies a practice dependent on hesitation and revision. The drawings also prevent the paintings from being understood as simple formal exercises in color or composition. They restore contingency to what otherwise might appear resolved."

Independent 20th Century opens tomorrow, bringing “blue-chip deep cuts to the Breuer,” writes Eileen Kinsella in @theartnewspaper.official

“Not only will the fair programme every inch of the Breuer building, but this edition of Independent 20th Century will be 75% bigger than previous iterations, with around 57 exhibitors and more than 130 artists.”
