Apparently we need a little automotive history lesson because when did women working as models suddenly stop being “car culture”? 😭 Women have been part of the automotive industry for DECADES. Trophy girls, race queens, grid girls, flag girls, paddock girls, Messe models, sponsor girls, promotional models — all existed long before Instagram, TikTok, OF or “clout chasing.” Women were hired at auto shows to help manufacturers sell cars and at racetracks to represent teams, sponsors, events and automotive companies. They presented trophies, stood on grids, waved flags, worked paddocks and promoted products. And who was hiring them? A historically male-dominated automotive industry. 😂 They knew exactly what they were doing. Models attracted attention, brought people to displays and helped sell a car, product, brand, team or event. It was marketing then, and it’s marketing now. Unfortunately, social media has blurred the definition of an “automotive model.” Now any girl taking pictures next to a car can get labeled one, while actual automotive models get stereotyped as “OF girls” or “clout chasers.” There’s nothing wrong with creating content with cars, but that doesn’t automatically make it promotional automotive modeling. If anything, models working events like Import Face Off and representing legitimate automotive brands, teams, businesses and events are keeping the original purpose of automotive modeling alive. We’re hired to represent something within the industry, interact with attendees, create promotional content and bring attention to the event, company, team or product we’re working for. Different decades. Different titles. Same industry. Same purpose. And this is ONLY the modeling side. It doesn’t even touch the generations of women who have been racers, mechanics, engineers, designers, fabricators, builders, photographers and enthusiasts. You don’t have to like automotive models, but saying they “aren’t part of car culture” ignores decades of automotive and motorsports history. Women didn’t suddenly show up when social media did. We’ve been here. by @roeknake
