#happyhens 🐓🐓🐓 my #loosewatercolour chickens from the other night.

Chickens are easily one of my favourite birds. Their funny, happy antics and chubby, wobbly bodies make them so fun to paint 😁

I grew up with bantams and I hope to have them again someday when we buy our “dream farm”🐴🐓🐐✨Freckles was my favourite bantam. I taught her to jump up and grab cheese from my fingers. (Not sure how healthy it was for her, but my eight year old self thought it was pretty clever at the time 😆)

I went bigger with these guys and painted them on beautiful smooth A3 hotpressed paper. I find watercolour such a balancing act between shape and line-work. Capturing just enough detail without over working and losing the overall spontaneity of the piece. But I’m pretty happy with how these guys turned out. 🥰 They will be available in my shop along with some mini artworks soon. 🖼🐓🐦🎨

For the #pigeon enthusiasts out there.💗Quirky studies of some of the prettiest doves and pigeons from around the world. 🌏

With so many amazing and beautiful varieties there’s so much inspiration to be found in the columbidae family. 🐦🕊

Stout bodied birds with short legs, short necks, small heads and short, slender beaks, they come in many different colours and sizes. There are around 344 species, 13 sadly are extinct - 2 of the most famous species being the dodo and passenger pigeon.

A few cuties I have painted tonight are the Zebra dove, blue headed quail dove, Victorian crowned pigeon, speckled pigeon, flame breasted fruit dove and fancy pigeon - chosen for their beautiful colours and patterns. 🌈 Can you spot them? 🕊👀

These two A5 originals will be available in my shop this weekend (with identification key included) 😊🕊

Hope you’re having a lovely week! ❤️

My daughter is obsessed with seals or “puppies of the ocean” 🐶🌊😁

“Paint fat seals mummy - in watercolours pleeease” 🥰 So here they are, fat seal sketches, and some sea lions thrown in for good measure 🦭😁🦭

#funfact - did you know some seals can dive down to 900 mts and hold their breath for 2 hours!! Amazing!! 🙊

Wishing you a fabulous Sunday and week ahead! ❤️

Hello again all!- Happy new year and hope everyone’s been well! It’s been a while between watercolours but I finally pulled them out again, blew of the dust haha, and had a bit of fun picking up were I left of 😅#pigeonart

Had been racking my brain recently trying to come up with a way of painting water colours on different surfaces. While I loove the beautiful loose unpredictability of the medium, I was after a stronger, more robust surface than paper - something more permanent. I tried the water colour canvases - but the texture just didn’t work for me - no lovely transparency or running of the paint - they ended up looking similar to acrylic. So after a bit of research I found a water colour grounding medium and thought I’d give it a shot.

It’s bit of a process - 3 days of applying, sanding, reapplying and letting it dry thoroughly in between, but I have to say - I was super impressed with the results. It feels very similar to paper without the warping, colours come up more potent and the thicker, less diluted paint leaves a lovely raised shiny texture - almost like an embossed effect 😍

These quirky little Aussie spotted pidgies were inspired by the fat fellas I see waddling outside my studio every day, or basking in the sun in my garden. 🕊️

Have an awesome week everyone! 💜

Hello again and a belated happy new year!❤️

I had an extended break and have been painting mostly in oils, so not much time for watercolours recently.

But thought I’d share a funny, wobbly little sketch from my ideas sketchbook inspired by a totally adorable book - Animal BBFs by Sophie Corrigan. I’ve been reading it with Tallulah over the holidays and it’s fascinating. 🤓 It describes unlikely relationships between animals of different species. 🫢

For example the water buffulo and egret - or cows and cattle egret, love hanging out together - The egrets keep their coats clean by eating the insects that bother their big buddies 🐃🐮 Yes the animal kingdom is indeed weird and wonderful 😁💛

Anyway hope you’ve been well and survived the heat last weekend!

Shop is open with limited tees (due to my current focus on painting), but there are a bunch of samples and original art is on sale 👍

Enjoy the rest of your week! Ro xx 🧡

All the gorgeous pidgies. Some have flown off already but these guys are listed and still available. Original, hand painted little treasures, perfect to gift any bird lover or treat for yourself 🥰

This will be your last chance to nab one of these sweet, quirky little original watercolours as I will be mainly focussing on oils over the next few months. 🎨

DM me if you would like to give one a home, or head to my website for details. Hope you’re having a wonderful Monday! ❤️🕊

Mini pidgies now available just in time for Chrissy! 🎄

Above are few of my favourites. I have gorgeous fancy pigeons, and courageous carrier pigeons - dedicated to some of the bravest, most amazing pigeons of war who carried important messages home against all odds - even after being shot down and losing a leg like Cher Ami, attacked by hawks like Mary of Exeter, flying at record speeds like GI Joe or almost 200 kms across the ocean like Winkie 🫢👏 (see my listings for their full stories) 🕊🕊🕊

Also available in A6 are my colourful columbidae of the world - groups 3 & 4, (identification key included)

I also have some limited originals on sale! Go check them out! Link in bio ⬆️⬆️

Have a fabulous week ahead! ❤️Ro xx

Hi all, I hope you’ve been well! Found a little time today to pull out the watercolours and try some loose, super quick, slightly wonky, #mudlark or #magpielark studies.

These birds are similar to magpies but are smaller and have more white on them. 🤍 They are known for their “peewee” calls and singing duets with their lifelong partners ❤️ They build bowl-shaped nests by gathering wet mud and lining it with grass, fur, hair, and feathers, hence their name 😁🪺

I hope you’ve been enjoying the beautiful spring weather today, happy Friday! ❤️🌞 Ro xx

Hi guys! Hope you had a great spring holiday! I had a lovely time in Tassie now back into it with some birdy watercolours 💧💦

Have you heard of purple crowned fairy wrens? I only just discovered them recently. They’re relatives of the superb and splendid fairy wrens and are named for their little purple crowns 👑💜 They are endemic to northern Australia living in riparian areas consisting of dense shrubs and thickets in river grass.

During breeding season the males develop spectacular purple feathers on their crown (instead of the usual grey/brown)💜 Couples use song to communicate with each other and duets to ward off other wrens from their territory. So much sweetness in these little birds 🥰🎵💜

Happy Monday! 💜

PS. Also please keep a look out for the previous collaborating post with @eaglesnestgallery for some pretty floral and birdy oils which will be heading to the gallery soon 😊🖼🌸🦜💜 Ro xx
