On this day 10 years ago in Parko Eleftherias (‘Freedom Park’), Athens, Greece, months before the exhibition’s opening in April 2017, the @documenta14 public program Parliament of Bodies initiated 34 Exercises of Freedom – a series of talks, conversations, artist lectures and performances. Today, 10 years later, in a different place and context, a different here and now, to mark the anniversary at 7:45am this morning I performed a minor ‘exercise of freedom’ on Ohio State University campus, chalking the words ‘EXERCISE FREEDOM OHIO SEPTEMBER 14’ on the sidewalk outside the Wexner Center for the Arts, facing the Oval (the green space at the heart of OSU’s campus).

I did this to protest and bring attention to the ridiculous ban on chalking on campus sidewalks upheld by the university upper administration, in spite of legal action by ACLU calling the ban “unconstitutional”.

As an OSU faculty member in the Department of Arts Administration, Education and Policy member and a board member of @aauposu, I work to support everyone on campus in their rights to freedom of expression, from discussions in my classroom to the important debates within mechanisms of shared governance at the university. At the same time, my ‘exercise of freedom’ action today is also grounded in my rights to academic freedom by bringing attention to the 10 year anniversary of 34 Exercises of Freedom here and now in Ohio in 2026. In doing so, I am highlighting my current research project which asks: how can public education programming from the documenta 14 exhibition – which was called @aneducation_documenta14 – translate to the contexts of a public university within a settler colonial context?

I invite administrators, faculty, staff, students and alumni to openly engage with me by asking ourselves and each other the following questions posed by the organizers of the original 34 Exercises of Freedom program: what does it mean to be together, here, now? What can be done? Who and what are made visible? Whose voices can be heard and which remain silent? How can the public sphere be reorganized?

If you teach at OSU or are in any other way connected to the university as staff, student or ally, please sign the @aaup.osu petition in support of Non-Tenure Track Faculty (NTT). As I was quoted in saying in today's @columbusdispatch

"It is the elephant in the room of how the work of this university is being done by people who feel unsupported."

(In my spoken remarks, I also added: "Not just feel unsupported but ARE unsupported!")

Solidarity forever!
