minus plato? AIAI (for Anne Carson through Alkisti Efthymiou) - October 8, 2026

Listen & read at www.minusplato.com

I wrote this post today to congratulate Anne Carson for being awarded the 2026 Nobel Prize for Literature.

When I was a classicist, I was lucky enough to meet and collaborate with Carson, specifically in staging her PINPLAY and BRACKO during the exhibition Elliott Hundley: Bacchae at the Wexner Center for the Arts on October 28, 2011. She was also supportive of my work engaging with contemporary art since.

I often feel like if more classicists would take the lead of Carson’s engaged, expansive and urgent returns to ancient Mediterranean cultures and its literatures, the discipline would have been one I would have wanted to remain in.

Now, as I continue to learn with and from documenta 14 as an art educator, the experience, work and voice of Alkisti Efthymiou in critiquing the exhibition from within and from the perspective of the aneducation public education program, is a reminder for me to remain vigilant and not celebrate the 2017 exhibition as a muthos making it something it was not able to become beyond the logos.

Yet in all of this, voice matters more and more as generative AI claims to speak for us.

minus plato? Radio Show Me What Democracy Looks Like - Episode 7 - October 7, 2026

In this seventh episode of Radio Show Me What Democracy Looks Like, we think about both “The People” and people in the visual culture of democracy, Apostolos Georgiou’s Untitled (2016) and all those people who at some point, in some place, in some way reacted to what was putting them down by posing thousands of questions.

In this sixth episode of Radio Show Me What Democracy Looks Like, we focus on architecture, monuments and spaces in the visual culture of democracy, Rebecca Belmore’s Biinjiya’iing Onji (From Inside) (2017) and the eruption of truth.

This post is dedicated to all First Nation, Native American & Indigenous people impacted by the devastation of Residential and Boarding Schools on this day of Truth & Reconciliation & every day.

Radio Show Me What Democracy Looks Like is a minus plato? weekly radio show inspired by 34 Exercises of Freedom at documenta 14, held in Athens, Greece in September 2016.

The show has been created for the online class Art Education 2600: Visual Culture: Representation and Society that I'm currently teaching at This Ohio State University.

It could also be called 14 New Exercises of Freedom, Ohio, made during the frenzy of the Midterm election season in an increasingly less free and democratic society in this, the 250 anniversary of the United States of America as an independent, settler colony.
