Roger Ingerton is known and remembered in many ways as the most influential tattooist in N.Z. history. Roger was a pioneer of custom, large scale cohesive tattoos and ushered in the revival of Moko as we know it today.

Roger was born in Wellington 1939. After tattooing in Australia with Wally Hammond and opening his own shop there, Roger and his wife Meg returned to Wellington in 1972 where he worked alongside Kevin Gray at his studio located at 144 Vivian St.

In 1974, Kevin retired from tattooing and Roger took over the studio. In 1977, Roger moved the studio to 198 Cuba St and established ‘Roger’s Tatooart’ where it has stood ever since. For many years, Roger was the only tattooist in Wellington.

Roger retired from tattooing in late 2009 and handed the shop down to his friend and colleague Tom Downs who has worked at Roger’s since 2002. Roger sadly passed away in 2015. Earlier this year, Tom handed the shop over to Dre Rock to continue the shops legacy.
