{RESURRECTION} Okay, I didn't actually die, but losing three people last year put my desire to paint/letter/calligraph in the bin. What helped? A lot of climbing with @happyyogabones; movie nights with Ol, WhatsApp podcasts with @letteredbykayleigh and @cotswolds_calligraphy; all the kakuro and sudoku I could get my paws on; and shaking my coccyx to @ash_1977 in February. Oh, and watching The Martian 36 times. Reopening my books to client work will come in time. For now, I'm just thankful I have paint. 🎨💜🫶 taken in Worcestershire by @rogueletters

{TRUTH COMES CRAWLING} As it was music that did a CPR on me wanting to do anything mildly creative again (I nearly applied to the OU to finish my maths degree in February, don't ask), it's fitting that music play a part in me ceasing my unintentional online retirement. {SHARED WITH PERMISSION} I recently had the honour of creating a piece to celebrate the life of our friend, Martyn Reid. This is Mart and his wife, Neesha, on their wedding day, surrounded by the words to their song. I thought this would be the hardest piece to paint, but I got to spend hours looking at my friends' faces, remembering good times and laughing at how much white paint I needed for my fellow Celt. Hand-painted signage, but make it manicure-adjacent. Sam first mentioned sprucing up her desk while she was mid-miracle, turning my post-climbing troll hands into aquamarine stunners fit for Instagram close-ups. I said yes, of course. I mean, who wouldn’t want create a custom design for the best nail technician this side of the Channel? (And possibly the other side too. But let’s not start a turf war.) Yesterday, I enjoyed a morning of coffee, lettering and me trying not to get paint on the places I wasn't being paid to apply paint on, while Sam kindly handed over a fresh brew and pretended not to watch me wreck my immaculate nails in the name of art. No Brush Pen? No Problem. Calligraphy isn’t just about fancy nibs and pressure-sensitive tools — you can still create something beautiful with a simple monoline pen. Once you’ve nailed your basic strokes (hint: that’s what we focus on in my workshops), you can add monoline script to your lettering toolbox and use it everywhere. Writing out my latest workshop attendees’ names with my gifted Sharpie Creative Markers — hardly any flexibility in the nib, but still looking real good. Proof that if you know your letterforms, you can create gorgeous calligraphy with just about anything. If you came to my last Worcester class, see your name? Say hi in the comments! Painting this mural for St Catherine’s CE Primary was pure joy from start to finish. There’s just something magical about bringing colour into a primary school. The little thumbs-ups, the “well done!”s, the wide-eyed stares (and occasional pizza confusion 🍕)… honestly, it brought me some much-needed joy. 🎯 Molotow paint. One wall. 22 hours. A whole lot of ladder climbing. This mural at St Catherine’s CE Primary started with a paper cup of paint and a sketch, and ended with a whole lot of colour (plus one kid thinking I was painting a pizza 🍕). Massive shoutout to the staff for guarding my ladders, and to the reception kids for the endless thumbs ups. Honestly, 10/10 audience. Would perform again. Got a sad-looking wall? Hit me up!
