Shortly after moving to SC, I started getting into building bicycles. I’d find good deals on Marketplace, strip them down to the frame, and build them back up with a mix of new, modern components and high-end vintage parts.

When we left NC, I left a lot of my hobbies in the mountains. Coastal SC is really beautiful, but hiking isn’t exactly a thing here, and disc golf hasn’t quite made its way down the coast yet. Building and riding bikes filled that void pretty quickly, and next thing I knew I was working part-time at our local bike shop in town.

Much like disc golf, mental healthcare jobs haven’t really made their way down the coast either. I spent the first couple years we lived here working at a brewery in town, which was a lot of fun, but after a while the rinse-and-repeat of it all had my brain feeling pretty stagnant.

The bike shop ended up being a really good fit. After several months part-time, I came on full-time, and when the owner opened another store in a neighboring town, it created an opportunity for me to help run this one.

It’s been a lot of fun being part of the outdoor recreation space in a community that doesn’t have a ton of outdoor recreation opportunities.

Long story short: I really like building and working on bikes now. I haven’t shared much of this part of my life on here, so here’s a little update on what I’ve been up to these days—and a picture of my most recent build. taken in Beaufort, South Carolina by @roguewade
