Iris van Herpen builds her world around things that still have no place within the conventional definition of clothing. Sue-an van der Zijpp, curator at the Groninger Museum in the Netherlands, says: “Our culture has always maintained a dichotomy between machine-made and man-made, and she is merging that.”
Seeing Iris’s work up close made her relationship with technology even more apparent to me. She does not belong to a generation that grew up with computers, yet today, techniques such as 3D printing and laser cutting are an essential part of her process. Perhaps an important part of design is finding your own form and language before others have a name for it. For me, this process will always be more interesting than the final result.

آیریس وَن هِرپِن جهان خودش را با چیزهایی می‌سازد که هنوز جایی در تعریف معمول لباس ندارند. سوآن وَن دِر زیپ، کیوریتور موزه Groninger هلند می‌گوید “فرهنگ ما همیشه بین کار ماشینی و دست‌ساز، مرزی می‌گذارد؛ اما آیریس این دو را باهم ترکیب می‌کند.” دیدن آثار آیریس از نزدیک، رابطه‌اش با تکنولوژی را برای من پررنگ‌تر کرد. او از نسلی نیست که با کامپیوتر بزرگ شده باشد، با این حال، امروز تکنیک‌هایی مثل چاپ سه‌بعدی و برش لیزری بخش مهمی از روند کار او هستند. شاید بخش مهم طراحی همین است که شکل و زبان خودت را قبل از اینکه دیگران برایش اسم بگذارند پیدا می‌کنی. برای من، این مسیر همیشه از نتیجه جالب‌تر است. taken in New York City by @rokni_design

In July, I visited the Sculpting the Senses exhibition at the Brooklyn Museum. Seeing Iris van Herpen’s work up close was a completely different experience from what I had always seen in photographs and videos. It was the last exhibition I visited before heading to Los Angeles.

ماه جولای وقتم را در نمایشگاه Sculpting the senses (مجسمه‌سازی حواس) در موزه بروکلین گذراندم. دیدن کارها از نزدیک، تجربه‌ا‌ی متفاوت از چیزی بود که همیشه در عکس‌ها و ویدئوها دیده بودم. این آخرین نمایشگاهی بود که قبل از رفتن به لس‌آنجلس به آن سر زدم. taken in New York City by @rokni_design

I don’t see Turkmen clothing as something confined solely to a traditional frame. To me, clothing isn’t something that simply belongs to the past and should remain there.
