Hello friend! 🏞️

So I'm here at the upper emerald pool, and this is what feeds it. I think I must have missed a sign somewhere because I definitely missed the middle pool. It’s just something to behold, really. You can kind of hear the angels singing if you listen real close. Look at that spire rock over there, with trees growing right on it. It’s amazing how nature carves everything out, so slowly, ever so slowly. All these rocks, they used to be way up there, part of the walls, and now they're part of the pool. I can only imagine what it must be like here when the monsoon hits and all that water comes rushing down those splits in the rock. It’s just something to behold.

Be good to each other.

Hello friend! 🏞️

This is a river, and this is a cliff, and together it's the Narrows. I've got some river shoes and a staff, and I'm just taking a stroll along the water. It's getting late, so I'm not going to be able to go very far, but this is the beginning of them. I think it gets even better further in, but even just this first bit, seeing the water and the sheer rock walls rising up, it's pretty incredible. How does nature do it? I want to know. How does it do it?

Gratitude's high on my list of feelings right now. Roll for veterans.

Hello friend! ☀️

Seventy miles and eleven hours of riding can make a person hungry. And after all that, this was waiting for me in the microwave. That's the guy. That is the man.

It’s moments like these that really make the miles melt away. When you’ve been putting one pedal in front of the other all day, and you finally roll into where you’re supposed to be, and there’s somebody there looking out for you… that’s everything.

This journey is about more than just the miles. It’s about the connections, the support, and knowing you’re not out there alone. And sometimes, the biggest support comes in the form of a warm meal and a friendly face.

I appreciate all that service. You guys are the best.

...and I can't wait to see what happens next!

Hello friend! 💎

I'm not gonna lie — I found myself in a place that felt like the inside of a dinosaur's head today, or at least a stegosaurus's horns. It's a genuine sparkle cavern, man, with more sparkles than you can count. Seriously, the flowstone formations are just breathtaking, and some of them look like french fries dipped in ketchup. The guide even told a story about how they used to sell hot food here back in the 90s. I guess they stopped for some reason.

Navigating the cave had its moments. It got a bit slippery going downhill, especially where they had that mound of concrete, so walking sideways was the move. There was a bit of water too, but sticking to the right kept things smooth. We headed into what they call the Diamond Room, a pretty massive space where they originally planned to bore a 400-foot tunnel from the gift shop. Sadly, the machine wasn't up to the task, and they ended up using dynamite to carve out a shorter tunnel elsewhere.

It's fun sharing this stuff. Seeing all these translucent formations, I couldn't help but wonder if they glow in the dark. It's moments like these, discovering the unexpected, that really make this journey feel like a purpose.

...and I can't wait to see what happens next!

Hello friend! 🚶

Before I came to the Narrows, which is where I'm going to enter now, I found this thing. It's kind of sturdy, and I wasn't sure if it was too much, but I asked a kid and he said, "The bigger the better." It kind of makes me feel like a wizard, you know? I just cut off my beard and now I have this thing. I asked three people if I should keep it, and it was unanimous — they all said, "Uh, keep it."

I completely forgot my tortilla. I had tortillas and tuna fish lunch all planned, but I only brought one tuna fish packet. So I have extra tortillas, but nothing to put in them. I put some mayonnaise in there, but I'm not that desperate. I'll just carve up with these tors and make it power home to the home base and then I'll eat a lot of food.

Sean said I needed a walking stick, so here we go. Look at what the universe provides for you when you need something. It's pretty cool.

Hello friend! 🗺️

I've been doing a lot of talking to people on the road, but sometimes you run into places that just make you stop and listen. I spent some time deep in a cave recently, and the guide was telling us about how the formations happened millions of years ago. It's wild to think about the slow, steady work of water and minerals creating these incredible shapes.

He pointed out these formations on the ceiling, and asked what they looked like. Someone said marshmallows, and I thought that was neat. I see them more like popcorn, especially the stuff on the walls that they call cave popcorn. Apparently, it's formed by water seeping through the rock, evaporating, and leaving behind those mineral deposits. He said most of what we were seeing was dormant, not actively growing because it's so dry in there right now. Makes sense.

There were also these dome shapes on the ceiling. He explained those were from when the cave was full of water, heated from deep in the earth, and it swirled around dissolving the limestone. It’s like nature’s own slow-motion art project. He also showed us a map with a dot and warned us not to follow it if we got lost – said it was the period at the end of your story. Definitely gave me a chill, but he clarified it’s not a true dead end, just a tight squeeze that leads to another passageway. Always good to know.

It's fun sharing this stuff.

Roll for veterans and I hope I'll see you out on the path.

Hello friend! 🔦

Took a little detour and found myself exploring some incredible caves. The guide was explaining how some of the stalactites, which are these formations hanging from the ceiling, have fallen into the flowstone below. The flowstone has actually grown over them, showing that this happened a long, long time ago, even before people were down there. It’s pretty wild to think about the history locked away in these places.

We walked for about an hour, and then it was time for a break at the bottom of this staircase. It was so cold in there, and I even got a taste of some orange juice – the guide called it being ‘kissed by the cave.’ They even did a little demonstration of what it would be like without any lights on, just pure darkness. Seriously cool, but also a bit unnerving.

It's moments like these, seeing nature's artistry carved out over thousands of years, that make me appreciate the journey. Each discovery, whether it's a cave formation or a friendly face on the road, is part of the purpose. I don't know how I found it, but this is it.

Alright, catch you on the next one.

Hello friend! 😮

So, picture this: we're deep underground, and the guide's explaining how this whole massive cave system was basically built on the ocean floor, then cemented, compacted, and turned into limestone. Fast forward millions of years, the sea level drops, and then sulfuric acid-laced groundwater starts doing its thing, carving out these incredible spaces. It’s pretty wild to think about the sheer timescale involved.

He mentioned that while other parts of the cave get wetter, this particular section doesn't flood. Apparently, the water table is at least 150 feet below the lowest point, so no need to worry about sudden shutdowns. Then we get to this spot called the Cracked Dome. It was formed by swirling water, but the big vertical crack? That’s from a recent earthquake… just kidding! That crack’s been there for millions of years, and we’re perfectly safe. No worries about anything falling, thankfully.

But here’s the cool part: an optical illusion. If you close one eye or hold up your camera just right, you can see something else in the shadows. Some folks see a mask, others a butterfly. It’s a neat little trick of the light in this ancient place. Nature, awe, and wonder, right?

Roll for veterans.

Hello friend! 😮

Man, I tell you what — I thought I'd seen it all, but then you step into a place like this and it just blows your mind. We're talking translucent formations, cave coral with branches pointing upward like a Christmas tree, and a mud waterfall that looks like a petrified cascade. It's wild how nature does this stuff, leaving behind calcite that hardens into rock over time, even flowing over older formations. I saw ledges that looked like herds of elephants, and the guide mentioned it felt like a white Christmas in Sonora, which is pretty neat.

It's moments like these that make you stop and just look. You think you've seen everything, and then you're presented with something completely new. This particular section was called the 'Christmas tree room' and it's easy to see why. The airflow is so unique it makes the stalagmites grow upwards, pointing to the sky.

It's fun sharing this stuff, and seeing these incredible sights reminds me of the beauty out there waiting to be discovered. You never know what you're going to stumble upon. Nature, awe, and wonder, right? It's why I love this journey. Serious business, people.

Roll on, everybody.

Hello friend! 😲

Well, this leg of the journey took a detour into the earth. Turns out, Horseshoe Lake has a twin hiding in the back, and it’s a bit… shallow. We navigated through a trench dug into the cave floor, past flowstone that’s still growing. My belly button would have been the original floor level, can you imagine? Then there’s Optical Illusion Lake, which looks shallow but clocks in at around 16 feet deep. Nature, awe, and wonder, right?

The cave walls are decorated with these wild formations called helictites, all bent and twisted from airflow. But the real surprise? What looks like applesauce down by a table is actually a solid stalagmite. It’s funny how things aren’t always what they seem, and sometimes a pile of ‘applesauce’ is just really cool geology. Serious business, people.

Roll with the punches, that's what you gotta do, whether you're on a bike or exploring underground. I love you. I know people don't like saying that word a lot in casual settings, but it's true.

...and I can't wait to see what happens next!

Hello friend! 🗺️

We stumbled upon another passageway branching off, and it turns out I'd actually been up there before and looked down on the path we were walking. It’s part of this whole wild tour thing. The lighting in here was interesting, with wires hidden in all sorts of places, sometimes under the concrete, sometimes in cracks in the rock. Someone suggested putting little gnomes around, which, funny enough, reminded me of a little plastic skeleton on the wild tour route. They said it’s the only human skeleton, and they point it out to people, which is a pretty wild thing to say in a cave.

As we moved down the passageway, I noticed these horizontal cracks on both sides. They're called bedding planes, essentially just thin cracks in the limestone that got enlarged by water over time. You probably see them a lot in cliffs. These beds started out as sediment layers at the bottom of an ocean that covered this area about 105 million years ago, back when dinosaurs were still roaming around. Limestone is mostly calcite, the same stuff seashells are made of, and we think this limestone here is actually formed from ancient seashells.

And then we saw it – a seashell still preserved right there in the rock. I stopped to point my flashlight on it so everyone could get a good look as they passed. There are so many more of these ancient seashells in the limestone, but they’re covered by this layer of what they call cave popcorn. It’s pretty amazing to see something so ancient, a direct link to life from millions of years ago, just sitting there in the rock. Nature, awe, and wonder, for sure.

Roll for veterans and I hope I'll see you out on the path.

Hello friend! 🌦️

Here lies George Hunt. Or maybe it's the Hunts. The tombstones here are made of wood, which feels pretty economical. Some graves don't even have that, just a simple rock, or a rock with some coins on top. It's a different way to remember people. There are Native Americans buried here too, at the Grafton cemetery. I saw one grave with a picture, but it was of the mountain, not the person. I wonder about that.

I saw a tombstone for Cedar Pete, who was a Paiute leader. It's fascinating to think about who these people were, what they did. Were they friends? Were they family? It's like a little puzzle, and you have to trust your guide to tell you the story. Reverend Berry, his grave is marked with granite. It says he was killed by Indians. That's pretty direct.

And the coins. So many coins. I'm not sure if it's for luck, or just a way to say rest in peace. I made up a story that it's for crossing over, like a fare. Who knows, right? It's a place that makes you think.

Nature, awe, and wonder — go fill yourself with some.
